The purpose of this class is to assist corrections deputies by performing various functions associated with the care, custody and control of inmates. This class is responsible for varying job duties depending on area of assignment. This class works according to established procedures under general supervision; makes decisions according to established guidelines.
The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
* Maintains security within the Jail Complex at all times.
* Operates electronically operated security doors to assure authorized movement of persons throughout the jail facility.
* Conducts counts of inmate workers and reports this information to the designated person/station.
* Monitors and controls all movement within the unit in order to maintain the security and safety of all personnel and inmates.
* Maintains the security and accountability for any and all keys issued or received.
* Updates the key logs, reflecting any and all changes made to keys or locks.
* Monitors radio transmissions and correctly reacts to all appropriate communications in a timely manner.
* Monitors and responds to personnel calls/requests in an expedited manner.
* Responds to emergencies as directed.
* Responds to inquiries made about various procedures/requests from the public in a professional and courteous manner.
* Answers inmates' questions in an objective and professional manner.
* Supervises and controls inmate workers; monitors for difficulties and notifies security if necessary.
* Monitors inmates working through the use of CCTV.
* Prepares a daily inventory of control room supplies.
* Inspects and replaces fire extinguishers and Scott air packs.
* Regular, dependable and punctual attendance is an essential function of this job.
* High school diploma or equivalent.
Work is performed inside the Jail Complex. Employees will have contact with inmates during the normal course of the work day.
Work is completed in twelve (12) hour shifts; employees must be able to work shifts: (6:00am - 6:00pm or 6:00pm - 6:00am.) Applicants need to be available to work any shift; days/nights, weekends and holidays.
Employees are subjected to extended work days and hours to meet operational needs or in the event of an emergency event.
Successful completion of a criminal background investigation including polygraph, reference/employment/neighborhood checks. submit to screening for illegal drug use prior to assuming position and will be subject to return to duty, post-accident and/or random and reasonable suspicion drug tests while employed with BCSO.
During an emergency, the Sheriff will determine who is considered an emergency responder and whose work is necessary to maintain the operation of law enforcement and correctional facilities. This determination is subject to change based on staffing and the operational needs of the agency.
