Job DescriptionSRNL's Materials Science and Disposition group is seeking a qualified Corrosion Scientist/Engineer to grow the laboratory's portfolio in the areas of materials sciences, materials corrosion, and materials performance evaluation in nuclear waste environments. Successful candidates would have a Ph.D. in a materials related field, demonstrated ability to perform independent research in materials corrosion and performance evaluation, ability to apply and interpret scientific data to solve problems, and years of lab experience achieved after Ph.D. completion. Field of Study/Capabilities include but not limited to chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science/engineering, physics and related science or engineering disciplines. In the role, the candidate will work on interdisciplinary teams to propose and define the scope of technical programs and develop effective and efficient solutions to challenging problems, including development of first-of-kind concepts for materials system solutions for: -materials corrosion assessment in highly radioactive waste environments, and -materials performance evaluation for variety of assets such as pipeline and large storage tanks, etc.ResponsibilitiesResponsibilities:
- Evaluate the performance of materials via mechanical testing, fracture toughness testing, corrosion testing, or other performance-based testing as needed using national standards.
- Present results of research to appropriate scientific and business audiences and may participate in commercialization of results.
- Characterize parts and materials from existing facilities and metal additive manufacturing processes using optical microscopy/metallographic techniques, SEM, EDS, EBSD, TEM, or other relevant methods.
- Practice investigative techniques to determine the best approach.
- Create groups outside the immediate team to tackle scientific problems. Ability to work with multi-discipline teams to solve these problems will be crucial to the candidate and SRNL's success.
- Does not manage employees but may mentor and/or train subordinates.
- Works safely with particular attention to quality. Complies with all policies and standards. Maintain appropriate level government security clearance.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:
- BS + 4-6 yrs; MS + 3-5 yrs; PhD + 2-4 yrs
- Ability to obtain and maintain appropriate level government security clearance which requires a US citizenship status. For ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, US Citizenship is Legally Required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- BS + 10-15 yrs; MS + 5-10 yrs; PhD + 3-5 yrs.
- Should demonstrate extensive understanding and expertise for various materials in variety of systems.
- Candidates with well established publications in refereed journal and conference proceedings will be given preference.
