Job Description:

Reporting to the Director of the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), the Counselor III provides counseling and related services to Eastern University students, provides consultation and training to the Eastern University community, and assists the CAPS Director with supervision of counseling staff and advanced clinical care issues. This is an on-ground, 40 hours/week, 12-month position. Some evening hours and occasional weekend and evening availability for crisis response are required.

* Conducts intake assessments with students requesting counseling services and develops referral or treatment plans.

* Assists with triage of requests for services. Assigns cases for counseling and makes other treatment dispositions in the absence of the Director or when requested.

* Counsels students in psychological, emotional, social, and spiritual areas with an emphasis on supporting academic functioning. Uses individual and group methods.

* Refers students to resources off-campus when appropriate. Coordinates aftercare and return-to-campus-planning for students returning from psychiatric hospitalization.

* Supports the center's crisis response. Responds to counseling and mental health emergencies during normal work hours. May be contacted after hours by the Director or other university staff for consultation regarding crises with students on the caseload and/or to support Residence Life staff in responding to student crises. Assists trainees and other counseling staff in the management of emergencies in the absence of the Director.

* When requested by the Director, provides workshops and other outreach activities on mental health, emotional/social adjustment, and academic adjustment.

* Consults with faculty and staff regarding student-related psychological adjustment issues when requested by the Director. Provides training to the Resident Assistants, Student Chaplains, and other student leaders as requested.

* May supervise graduate counseling interns and professional counseling staff who are accruing experience toward licensure, as well as undergraduate interns, when requested by the Director.

* Prepares case documentation on a regular basis; prepares special reports and correspondence when needed.

* Submits records of contacts with students on a weekly basis.

* Attends administrative supervision meetings with Director (or designated substitute) and department staff meetings.

* Other duties as assigned.

Master's degree with PA licensure in clinical counseling or a related field and at least three (3) years post-licensure experience providing direct counseling service, including crisis management, are required. Experience in a higher education setting and clinical supervisory experience are preferred. Awareness of multicultural issues in mental health and evidence of readiness to engage students from diverse backgrounds are essential. Interest in and ability to articulate an understanding of the integration of psychological counseling and a Christian worldview are essential. Must be able to climb three flights of stairs several times a day.
