Under minimal supervisor this position provides LMU student populations with accurate, timely, and comprehensive information about financial aid programs. The Counselor develops and maintains expertise in all federal, state, and institutional aid programs in order to evaluate, interpret and implement recommendations for students in person, by phone, and by email to ensure that all prospective and enrolled students maximize the aid resources available to them. Position Specific Responsibilities 1. Provide financial aid counseling to all prospective and enrolled students across undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. Develop and maintain expertise in all federal, state, and institutional aid programs, and work to update training as programs change or new programs are developed. (30%) 2. Independently review student records to determine financial aid eligibility, make awards, correspond with students, and revise student record data as necessary. (15%) 3. Represent the university by giving presentations on financial aid at high schools, regional workshops, and other group settings. Regularly provide information on aid programs in on-campus settings through presentations and the distribution of written materials. (25%) 4. Collaborate with colleagues in Undergraduate, Graduate, and Law Admissions to ensure that prospective students are provided with timely and comprehensive information about aid programs available to them. (10%) 5. Collaborate with colleagues in Student Financial Services to develop a comprehensive understanding of student Cost of Attendance charges. Counsel students on budgets, key dates and requirements, and the process of applying financial aid to billed charges. (10%) 6. Represent LMU in the financial aid community by participating actively in professional organizations and conferences. (5%) 7. Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Director or AVP, Financial Aid. Requisite Qualifications: Typically a Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Incumbent will be expected to continue upgrading knowledge, skills and abilities needed to keep abreast of regulation/policy changes. Minimum two years of experience in financial aid at a post-secondary institution, preferably a private institution. Demonstrated knowledge of financial aid application processing, need analysis, federal verification, and awarding of federal, state, and university funds. Ability to explain complex financial aid issues clearly to students and parents, determine aid eligibility, speak to large groups, counsel prospective students, give presentations, and develop brochures and other written communications. Ability to use Financial Aid management system software (e.g. Banner). Working knowledge of database systems and reporting. Knowledge of Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Word. NCAA, Conference, and University Rules Compliance Conduct all aspects of program in accordance with the rules and policies established by Loyola Marymount University, the Athletics Department, all Sports Conference Affiliations, and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Complete all rules compliance information as required. Participate in an annual evaluation of adherence to rules compliance (LMU, Athletic Department, Sports Conference Affiliations, NCAA) with immediate supervisor.
