Description St. Matthew's Catholic School is seeking a School Counselor for the 2024-2025 school year. The role of our School Counselor is to provide guidance and support services to the students, the families, and our school personnel. The primary goal is to enrich student development in academic, personal/social, spiritual, and behavioral domains. The School Counselor is available to meet individually with students or in small groups to address issues such but not limited to: bullying, self-esteem, depression, family concerns, grief and loss, behavior, friendships, anger management, etc. The School Counselor is a resource to meet the needs of the students & families, staff, and the community in which we serve. RequirementsResponsibilities and Tasks:
- Counsel students individually and in small groups
- Provide presentations pertaining to Mental Health concerns, as requested
- Help organize and facilitate panels as well as participate in discussions with community members
- Conduct classroom guidance activities (e.g.SEL, intrapersonal skills, soft skills)
- Provide services to students in the areas of academic, personal/social, Spiritual development
- Refer students and their families to appropriate school personnel and community agencies
- Maintain an ongoing liaison with community agencies and other resources to meet student needs; refer parents and student to agencies when appropriate
- Assist and participate in communications for support services within school
- Encourage teacher/parent communication and community involvement
- Provide individual and/or group counseling in response to school-wide crisis
- Participate in professional development activities
- Maintain a variety of files/records and departmental library of supplementary and reference materials
- Keep Administration appraised of any problems encountered
- Serve as a member of the Assess & Care Team
- Assist the Front Office in tracking attendance, tardies, and absences
- Perform related work as required
- Maintaining a strict level of confidentiality on all matters relating to SMS & families within the established school operating procedures.
- Performing other duties as assigned by the Principal
Qualifications:
- Master's Degree from an approved School Counselor Education program or endorsement in school counseling with Virginia certification in school counseling. Strong organizational, interpersonal communication skills, detail oriented. Skills in preparing written reports. Professional demeanor, adaptable, and ability to respond to multiple demands. Proficient use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required in addition to familiarity with Google Workspace. Preferred: **A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications, discretion made by Administration. **
Working Conditions: This is a full time 10 month position requiring 30 hours per week (Monday through Friday 7:30AM - 3:30PM, mid-August through mid-June). Physical Demands: Light physical effort required. Regularly required to sit for extended periods, stand, walk, reach, bend, lift, listen, talk and perform computer key boarding.
