Job Type Full-timeDescriptionReports To: Livestock ManagerLocation: North Powder and Columbia Basin, OregonWilson Cattle Company is searching for a highly skilled Cowboy to join the livestock team at our operations in North Powder and the Columbia Basin of Oregon. The incumbent will be responsible for all aspects of good cattle health and wellness while managing natural resources in an effective and sustainable manner. Wilson Cattle Company is a sixth generation Cow Calf and Stocker operation and a leader in sustainable cattle management practices.The incumbent will report to and work closely with the Livestock Manager to achieve the goals and objectives of the business. This involves working closely with livestock and farm crews, administrative staff, customers, trucking operations, and internal partners.Position Summary:The role of this position is to care for the health and well-being of all cattle owned or managed by Wilson Cattle Company (WCC), ensuring that the highest level of cattle handling, animal welfare and land stewardship practices are adhered to. This position will require flexing between two different operations. During Spring, Summer, and Fall, the position is based in North Powder, OR. Between late Fall and early Spring this position will be based in Boardman, OR utilizing circles to winter the cow herd. These dates will vary year to year. These dates could range from a couple of days to a two week stretch. Housing is provided at both locations.Duties include:
  • Proficiently working cattle on horseback, castrating, branding, weaning, sorting and loading animals in a low-stress and efficient manner.
  • Identify sick cattle and administer medications and vaccinations, as appropriate, using proper protocols and procedures.
  • Adhere to all Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) and ranch protocols related to your position and be responsible for documenting the execution of those protocols.
  • Work with cattle and pasture software, including chute-side and pasture tracking programs, to ensure accurate records are maintained on all classes of cattle.
  • Perform standard repairs and maintenance of corrals, fences and water systems as needed.
  • Provide regular maintenance of vehicles, housing, barns, and other outbuildings related to this position.
  • Be proactive in maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
  • Regularly attend and participate in crew safety meetings and other trainings.
RequirementsPreferred Qualifications and Requirements
  • Must be a self-starter with a strong work ethic and the ability to prioritize workload to ensure timely issue resolution.
  • Must have a minimum of three well-broke horses to safely perform all aspects of the job.
  • Must be an experienced cattleman and horseman with the ability to perform all duties in an efficient and safe manner while demonstrating the highest regard for animal welfare.
  • Willingness to work well alone, collaboratively in small groups of 2-3 employees for activities such as daily cattle moves and small projects, and in large groups of 8-10 employees for activities such as weaning, branding, processing and other larger projects.
  • Must be willing to learn and utilize progressive methods and new technology.
  • Must have an acceptable driving record.
