Job Description:
Provides forensic services to the Sheriff's Office, including processing of crime scene and evidence, makingfingerprint comparisons, and acting as a liaison between other departments within the agency and outsideagencies.include the following. Other duties may be assigned.Responds to a variety of crime scene calls, including but not limited to homicide, unattended death,suicide, fatality accidents, robbery, kidnapping, and burglary.Conducts crime scene searches and assists with narcotics searches, including documenting, collecting,preserving, submitting, processing, and maintaining custody, care, store, and in control of all evidenceobtained from the scene.Takes photographs and sketches major crime scenes of persons, injuries, property, and latentfingerprints for court presentation. Including overseeing the development and printing of film andmaintains files of crime scene negatives.Submits and receives returned evidence from forensic laboratories for court presentation.Handies all evidence received by the Sheriff's Office, including filing, organizing for court presentation,maintaining records of all evidence for the disposition of property, disposing of evidence, andmaintaining security of evidence.Attends all autopsies for photographs, fingerprints, and evidence removed by the pathologist.Establishes identities by making fingerprint comparisons.Receives fingerprint cards, updates on newly incarcerated offenders from Records Division, classifiesfingerprint cards by keeping record in computer for further reference, and retrieves fingerprint cards ofsuspects for comparison with latent prints.Testifies in court regarding fingerprint evidence, as well as pen packs on the punishment phase ofcriminal cases.Classifies, registers, retrieves, enters unknown fingerprints, and manages prints already logged into theOffice of Public Safety's Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS).Prints mug shots and constructs photo line-ups for investigators using X-ray image.Performs handwriting analysis, including examining, and comparing handwriting for various agencies,maintaining files of handwriting analysis, and testifying in court on related matters.Instructs training classes on crime scenes, fingerprints, evidence, and other issues.Assists other divisions, sections, or personnel in the office as needed or directed.Must adhere to a rotating on call schedule, within CSU investigators, in addition to regular office hours.QUALIFICATIONSTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Bachelor's Degree in Forensic Science, Criminal Justice, orrelated field Is preferred, but not required. 1.) Additional certification may be required. 2.) Critical thinking,problem-solving, and deductive reasoning skills. 3.) Strong communication skills (written and verbal). 4.) Ableto operate specialized computer software and photographic equipment. 5.) Attention to detail. 6.) Ability toworkday and night shifts, and over weekends. 7.) Ability to travel.KNOWLEDGE OFCrime Scene Investigators need to be familiar with procedures such as processing evidence, testifying in court,and standard office practices and procedures.SKILL/ABILITY TOOperate computers; write reports, letters, and other documents using proper format and grammar.Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; physically restrain other individuals; and establish andmaintain effective working relationships with co-workers, the public and their families.REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONSMust have and maintain a valid Texas Class 'C' driver's license.
