Department Statement

The Facilities Department is looking to fill a Custodial Supervisor position that will primarily focus on overseeing daily operations. The role involves working as part of the custodial management team and sharing responsibilities to deliver high-quality service to the campus community, while fostering a positive team environment. This position reports directly to the Custodial Operations Manager. Internal candidates are highly encouraged to apply.

The Facilities Department provides the physical environment, utilities, and facilities support services necessary to promote the educational and research activities of the university. To ensure quality service to our community, we provide strong coordination and communications between multi-functional groups and our customers, with a customer-oriented approach. Accountabilities

Primary focus is on the oversight of daily operations; scheduling and supervision of staff and providing coverage to meet the campus needs.

Specific accountabilities include, but are not limited to:

* Effective supervision over routine daily operations of the custodial team, including Forepersons.

* Ensure building conditions meet established standards for cleanliness and provide corrective actions and additional training.

* Ensure custodial staff execute work in a safe and sustainable manner following university policies and goals.

* Ensures that custodial staff demonstrate the university's behavioral competencies by presenting as courteous, responsive and maintaining positive interactions with campus stakeholders.

* Provide coaching, feedback and corrective action following the contractual progressive discipline related to behaviors, as needed.

* Accountable for conducting building inspection in conjunction with Forepersons and maintaining accurate records.

* Oversite of custodial timecards - ensures accuracy and contractual obligations are fulfilled and provides final approval for processing; discusses and explains changes with employees.

* Accountable for efficient custodial staffing and scheduling.

* Ensures proper training of custodians. Maintains and retains accurate records.

* Ensures selection and hiring of high-quality employees - serves and/or chairs search committees and makes hiring recommendations.

* Ensures equitable distribution of work assignments and high quality of employee work product through the use of performance feedback and assessments.

* Conducts disciplinary actions, in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.

* Responsible for providing feedback regarding employment status (hire, promotion and termination).

* Responsible for assisting with custodial budget oversight, including those costs related to supplies and equipment.

* Reviews and approves vacation, ensures appropriate level of staffing and tracks attendance, in accordance with the policy. Addresses absenteeism.

* Responds to emergency calls, as needed.

* Serve on campus committees as a representative of Facilities.

* Responsible for cross-training with the supervisor of building maintenance and special event coordination to effectively conduct duties in their absence or as needed.

Requirements

Professional Experience/ Qualifications

* A minimum of 5 years facilities experience.

* Demonstrated ability to lead, train, supervise, direct, motivate, and evaluate staff.

* Demonstrated ability to teach and lead others in the proper use of institutional equipment and supplies, operational techniques and customer service.

* Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of constituents.

* Demonstrated ability to use computer applications for work order entries, timesheet approval, email, communications and data analysis, Microsoft and Google Suites.

* Requires ability to prioritize.

* Knowledge of local, state and federal health & safety codes.

* Must have a positive approach, even in difficult situations.

* Must have the ability to respond to emergency and on-call situations during off shifts (evenings, nights and weekends).

* Must be capable of working collegially with a diverse group of faculty, staff and students on a daily basis.

Preferred Qualifications

* Prior experience as a Custodian is strongly preferred.

* Proven experience in a supervisory or leadership role is preferred.

* Advanced degree or certificate in a custodian supervisor or similar program preferred.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Certifications

A current valid driver's license, in accordance with the University's Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Use Policy is required.

Physical Requirements

* Must be able to perform all of the job duties required of a custodial position including the ability to stoop, bend, stand for long periods of time as well as lifting, carrying up to a maximum of 50 pounds in order to train others on work-related responsibilities.

* Must be able to handle heavy equipment, such as industrial vacuum cleaners, shampooers, buffers as well as containers, such as trash bags and cans.

* Responsible for following all procedures to conduct work activities in a safe manner including but not limited to wearing PPE required for specific duties and safe handling of chemicals as outlined by University policies and/or the supervisor.

* Responsible for immediately reporting any unsafe conditions to the supervisor and/or Environmental Health and Safety.
