Title: Custodian Custodian means a person employed to keep buildings clean and free of refuse, to operate the heating or cooling systems, and to make minor repairs. Job Summary: To perform duties which keep the county buildings in such a state of operating excellence that they present no problems or interruptions of the educational program. The custodian performs assigned custodial duties and repairs and receives supervision from the building administrator. The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed drugs while in the workplace. Alcohol and controlled substances which affect employee productivity, safety or judgment in the workplace will not be tolerated. Staff members serve as role models for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings. Staff members are expected to refrain from bullying, harassment, intimidation, and discrimination. Performance Responsibilities:

  • Arrange table and chairs for breakfast and lunch.
  • Secure the building at night.
  • Operate hand and small power tools.
  • Prepare facilities for activities and clean up after the activities.
  • Shampoo carpets.
  • Perform inspections for fire extinguishers and emergency lighting.
  • Clean ceiling and restroom vents.
  • Performs custodian work involving independent activity to keep school clean, sanitary, and in an orderly condition, as well as minor maintenance tasks.
  • Performs assigned manual work of ordinary difficulty and responsibility. Job assignments are in the form of written or oral instructions and are performed under supervision and reviewed periodically.
  • Maintains watch over property and grounds against trespassing, vandalism, and fire hazards. Signal police and fire departments when needed.
  • Maintains all floors in a clean and attractive condition, including regular waxing, and in a good state of preservation.
  • Performs supportive duties such as:
  • Displays Flag;
  • Flies Flag at half-staff;
  • Inventories supplies;
  • Reports safety hazards within building;
  • Stores equipment;
  • Services carpeted areas;
  • Assists in building maintenance by replacing window glass, cleaning gutters and drainpipes, freeing stopped sanitary and sink plumbing, repairing leaks, repairing furniture, doing simple painting, replacing lights, and performing other related work as assigned.
  • Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep, and repair.
  • Maintains grounds by cutting grass with hand and power mowers and string trimmers, collecting litter, trimming bushes and small trees, raking grounds, and performing minor repairs to walks, paths, walls, play apparatus, roads, and site improvements.
  • Snow and ice removal duties, treat sidewalks and parking lots as assigned.
  • Operates heating, lighting, ventilation, cooling, and electrical systems as assigned.
  • Perform routine lubrication services and minor preventative maintenance services.
  • Operates security systems and fire safety systems.
  • Inspects buildings and reports deficiencies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands: Must have physical strength, balance, hand-eye coordination, and stamina necessary to complete jobs in various areas. o Must be able to lift all supplies and materials about the custodian position. o Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and push and/or pull 50 pound loads at a time. o Must be able to stand and walk up to eight hours per day and climb multiple sets of stairs while carrying materials weighing between 30 and 60 pounds. Sitting: Rarely: ½ hour in an 8-hour work shift Standing: Constantly: 2 hours in an 8-hour work shift. Alternates continuously with walking.
