Our custodian must be flexible and a team player.Although this is not a full-tine position, the position is eligible for our great pension play through Iowa Public Employees' Retirement System (IPERS).The work hours for this position are:Sunday, 12:30-4:30pmMonday, 9:30-11:30am (can be flexible)Tuesday, 9:30am-4:30pmWednesday, 9:30am-4:30pmThursday, 9:30am-2:30pmOur employees are required to reside within (30) thirty miles of the City of Sioux City limits, including Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota. Duties Under supervision of various management, performs semi-skilled work required in the routine maintenance of various buildings, offices and facilities and adjoining grounds, walkways and sidewalks.
  • Cleans offices, buildings, conference rooms, hallways, stairways, elevators, and related areas.
  • Mops, sweeps, strips, waxes, buffs and vacuums floors; clean carpeting.
  • Washes and cleans walls, windows, stairs and handrails.
  • Picks up paper, trash and other debris around buildings and grounds.
  • Ensures building security, open and lock facilities.
  • Operates small snow blower and shovel snow.
  • Polishes and dusts furniture, wood railings, etc.
  • Drives vehicle to deliver and picks up various parcels and correspondence, and occasionally operates light equipment.
  • Cleans and sanitizes restroom facilities, sinks, toilets and floors.
  • Makes minor repairs to buildings and equipment, change light bulbs, adjust thermostats, etc.
  • Raises and lowers flags.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with officials, other agencies, fellow employees, and the general public.
  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance and working hours.
  • Expected to temporarily perform duties outside of normal classification in the event of a declared emergency. In the event that an employee is excused from work other than being sick, they will be required to report to work in a state of declared emergency.
QualificationsCognitive Demands, Skills and Abilities: Good working knowledge of the practices and procedures, supplies and equipment used in cleaning offices, buildings and related areas in an efficient and economical manner. Skill in cleaning, waxing and buffing activities which result in a professional condition and appearance of facilities. Ability to work alone and without close supervision. Job Knowledge: Knowledge of the uses of common hand tools and standard equipment used in the construction and maintenance work, particularly as applied to the specialized work to which assigned; general mechanical ability and ability to perform unskilled to semiskilled tasks in the construction and maintenance activities; ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions; physical strength and agility sufficient to do strenuous manual labor for extended periods, under varying weather conditions, and be able to stand on concrete for extended periods of time and be able to carry equipment up and down stairs. Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication: Requires effective communication skills and the ability to provide effective and courteous assistance to customers (external and internal). Requires the ability to speak effectively with fellow employees and customers; read in English and directions on cleaning supplies and chemicals; apply common sense understanding to the work process, procedures, programs and services; and to follow verbal and written instructions.Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk and sit. The employee frequently is required to stand; use hands and fingers to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and smell. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Occupational hazards include frequent contact with bodily waste and fluids that may result in exposure to contagious diseases.
