Position Type: Maintenance/Custodial/CustodianDate Posted: 11/3/2024Location: Garfield Heights High SchoolPosition: Custodian, High School (6D) Reports to: Building Principal/Maintenance Supervisor Employment Status: Regular/Full-time Status: Classified Description: Provide a safe, clean, and supportive environment for students, staff, and the public throughout the school day. This position involves regular cleaning, maintenance, and operational support for the school building and property, requiring close interaction with the school community and collaboration with administrative staff. Essential Functions:
  • Routine Cleaning and Maintenance:
    • Perform daily cleaning of high-traffic areas, including hallways, classrooms, restrooms, and common spaces, ensuring they are kept safe, clean, and ready for school activities.
    • Oversee that floors in all classrooms, corridors, restrooms, gymnasiums, dining areas, and other assigned spaces are swept and mopped daily.
    • Dust and clean furniture and woodwork, including windowsills, baseboards, stair rails, doors, and lockers, ensuring dust settles after sweeping.
    • Maintain restrooms by cleaning toilet bowls, urinals, sinks, and drinking fountains daily, and treat with disinfectant weekly.
  • Safety and Security:
    • Promote and uphold school safety practices, ensuring compliance with building safety standards.
    • Cooperate with local and state fire and boiler inspectors.
    • Secure the building daily, oversee energy conservation plans, and ensure that tools, cleaning materials, and supplies are properly stored.
    • Raise and lower the United States and Ohio State flags each day in accordance with school policy.
  • Repairs and Maintenance Support:
    • Complete routine repair work, including basic electrical, plumbing, and mechanical repairs, to keep the school facility operational.
    • Assist with maintenance tasks during remodeling and renovation, working alongside maintenance staff as needed.
    • Clean and maintain HVAC systems, including furnaces and air conditioners, to ensure optimal building conditions.
    • Conduct grounds maintenance, ensuring playgrounds and outdoor areas are prepared for recess, drills, and emergencies.
  • Support for Daily Operations and Events:
    • Assist with setup and breakdown of spaces for assemblies, meetings, or special events in collaboration with school staff.
    • Help with the unloading and storage of supplies and equipment.
    • Coordinate with the administrative team to ensure a clean and welcoming environment during school hours.
  • Inventory and Supplies Management:
    • Maintain an inventory of maintenance equipment and janitorial supplies, conducting an annual review and providing updates to the principal.
    • Ensure that all cleaning supplies and equipment are stored correctly and readily available.
  • Grounds and Seasonal Responsibilities:
    • During winter, ensure that all walkways, steps, and entrances are cleared of snow and ice before the start of the school day, applying salt as necessary.
    • Perform seasonal tasks such as cleaning windows, cutting grass, and other summer projects to maintain the building and grounds.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Health and Safety Compliance:
    • Respond promptly to clean up after student illnesses, following appropriate health protocols.
    • Adhere to OSHA and school safety guidelines for handling and storing cleaning chemicals and equipment.
  • Administrative Assistance:
    • Assist school administrators as needed with other duties and tasks to support the efficient operation of the school.
Qualifications:
  • Education: High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Experience: One to two years of custodial or maintenance experience preferred.
  • Certification: Building boiler operator license or other certifications as required by state and district regulations.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency with hand tools and basic electrical, plumbing, and carpentry knowledge for minor repairs.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Technical and Maintenance Knowledge: Basic knowledge of HVAC systems, building alarm systems, plumbing, and electrical repairs.
  • Safety Procedures: Training in OSHA/PERRAC protocols for chemical safety and emergency procedures.
  • Communication and Interaction Skills: Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students, and visitors, maintaining a courteous and professional demeanor.
  • Organizational Skills: Ability to manage time effectively, maintain daily records of tasks, and follow a scheduled routine.
Equipment Operated:
  • Cleaning and Maintenance Equipment: Vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbers, waxing machines, and various hand and power tools.
  • Outdoor and Grounds Equipment: Lawn equipment, snow blower, ladders, and other equipment required for seasonal maintenance.
Additional Working Conditions:
  • Physical Requirements: Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting (up to 65 pounds), and occasional ladder use for repairs and maintenance.
  • Environmental Exposure: Exposure to indoor and outdoor conditions, including inclement weather, for snow and ice removal.
  • Noise and Chemical Exposure: Occasional exposure to noise from power tools and chemicals used in cleaning.
  • Interaction with Students: Occasional interaction with unruly students, requiring patience and professionalism.
