Job Description:

Custodians are responsible for maintaining multisensory excellence standards for all LU facilities, on and off campus, by way of cleaning and sanitizing interior spaces. Emphasizing a clean, orderly, and aesthetically pleasing environment; Custodians will work alongside teammates and supervisors, utilizing good judgement to support the University's mission by providing a safe and sanitary environment. Custodians are considered essential personnel and are expected to be available in the event of school closings, delay, shutdowns, and any emergencies including clean up required because of severe weather conditions. Any other duties as assigned.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIESeports to work at required times and performs duties assigned by Custodial Supervisor including:Daily cleaning and sanitizing of bathroom facilities:Floors, toilets, walls, partitions, sinks, mirrors, showers, windows, glass doorsUses brooms, mops, buckets, vacuum cleaners, and other cleaning equipmentDaily cleaning of interior facility spaces:Offices, halls, classrooms, labs, food service areas, common areasGeneral outdoor services and maintenance:Sweeping entry areasCleaning mirrors, windows, and glass doors as neededCollects and disposes of trash and recyclable materials from all facilities Provides custodial services for scheduled and unscheduled events:May include irregular shifts (nights, days, weekdays, weekends, holidays)Attends to emergency needs as requiredSafety and compliance:Wears, uses, and maintains proper personal protective equipmentTracks safety data sheets, work orders, and facility formsObserves safety rules and regulationsIdentifies and reports safety issues, posting warning signs as neededInventory management:Stocks supplies in custodial closet for assigned buildingIdentifies and reports equipment, supplies, and repairs neededSecurity:Locks/unlocks classrooms as assignedSecures campus buildings daily (doors and windows) Floor care:Completes assigned work orders (stripping, waxing, carpet cleaning)Special events:Assists with campus graduations and other functionsMonitors lobbies and restrooms during events Knowledge and skills:Understands custodial methods, materials, chemicals, and equipmentFollows safety and sanitation practicesPrioritizes and manages multiple projects/tasksEstimates material and equipment needsMakes timely decisions appropriate to responsibility levelSupports established recycling effortsEmergency response:Addresses urgent custodial needs (e.g., spills, body fluid clean-up)Follows OSHA standards for blood-borne pathogen exposure controlMaintenance and reporting:Reports unsafe conditions, suspicious activity, and maintenance issuesProperly uses and manages cleaning suppliesContinuous improvement:Stays informed about emerging technologies and industry benchmarksWorks effectively as a team member, supporting LU's missionAdditional responsibilities:Performs seasonal tasks (e.g., snow shoveling)Completes other duties as assignedQUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALSEducation and ExperienceThis position requires a high school degree or GED. 1-3 years of related experience preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Must be able to work well with the public and co-workers and present a positive attitude. Clean and professional appearance.Must be courteous, detailed oriented. self-motivated, diligent, trustworthy, possess strong organizational skills and well-developed communication skills.Must be able to lift to 50+ pounds and perform duties of the Custodial trade in typical Virginia Climate and in an indoor/ outdoor setting.Experience with residential, and/ or commercial/ industrial cleaning (methods and safety) field is preferred.Working knowledge of safe and efficient operation of electrically and propane powered and manual cleaning equipment. It is well lighted, and the noise level is moderate.All waste and recyclable material must be removed from the facilities and carried to exterior waste receptacles throughout the day, regardless of weather conditions.On occasion, employees must be able and willing to work in exterior, non-climate-controlled settings, on occasion, such as athletic/special events and special projects.Employees routinely clean demolition and construction areas. These areas are often very dusty and not climate controlled. Strong odors are often present from paint, carpet, or other construction products.Employees may be exposed to blood borne pathogens, on occasion.Employees can expect to have to work on slippery floor surfaces.Driving RequirementsUse of one's personal vehicle (or LU vehicles) is required for travel in the performance of the essential functions of this position.
