Custodians are responsible for maintaining multisensory excellence standards for all LU facilities, on and off campus, by way of cleaning and sanitizing interior spaces. Emphasizing a clean, orderly, and aesthetically pleasing environment; Custodians will work alongside teammates and supervisors, utilizing good judgement to support the University's mission by providing a safe and sanitary environment. Custodians are considered essential personnel and are expected to be available in the event of school closings, delay, shutdowns, and any emergencies including clean up required because of severe weather conditions. Any other duties as assigned. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Reports to work at the required time and performs duties as assigned by the Custodial Supervisor. Performs daily cleaning and sanitizing of all bathroom facilities, including floors, toilets, walls, partitions, sinks, mirrors, showers, windows, and glass doors. Uses brooms, mop, buckets, vacuum cleaners, and other related cleaning equipment. Performs daily cleaning of all interior facility spaces, such as offices, halls, classrooms, labs, food service areas, and common areas. General outdoor services and maintenance such as sweeping entry areas, cleans mirrors, windows, and glass doors as needed. Collects trash and recyclable materials from all facilities, for collection, removal, and disposal of. Provides custodial services before, during and after any athletic, and any scheduled and unscheduled events, including irregular shifts that may include nights, days, weekdays, weekends, and holidays. Attends to emergency needs as needed, when needed. Wear, use, and maintain proper personal protective equipment. Keeps track of safety data sheets, work order and facility forms. Observes safety rules & regulations; identify & report safety issues, posting warning signs as needed. Stocks supplies in custodial closet for building for which employee has responsibility. Lock & unlock classrooms as assigned. Locks doors & windows daily to secure campus buildings. Completes assigned floor care work orders such as stripping, waxing, and carpet cleaning. Trains, and instructs others in the performance of their duties, including appropriate custodial practices and techniques, the safe use of equipment and materials. Assigns, reviews, and inspects the work of assigned staff, assists in maintaining employee time records and reporting absences and provides input to employee evaluations. Identifies and reports equipment, supplies and repairs needed. Leads and directs the work activities of a crew of custodians, while performing a full range of custodial duties. Responsible for scheduling time off to ensure the University's needs are met and appropriate coverage is addressed during personal time off. Assists in the set-ups and other functions for campus graduations, including, but not limited to working graduation ceremonies at assigned on and off campus locations. Provides hands on training, as well as explains job standards, while making sure that OSHA requirements, rules and regulations are met. Must possess knowledge of custodial cleaning methods, materials, chemicals, and equipment used in custodial work and of the safety and sanitation practices and measures required. Ability to work in a safe manner when handling and working with chemicals and operating equipment. Must be able to prioritize and manage multiple projects/ tasks with competing goals. Ability to determine and estimate material and equipment needs to complete tasks/ jobs/ responsibility in an efficient and effective manner. Working knowledge of effective lead practices and techniques. Ability to provide lead work direction, including training others in proper work methods and safety and providing feedback on work performance. Must be able to make timely decisions appropriate to level of responsibility and be able to explain reasoning for decision, in addition to including appropriate people in decision-making process. Ensures that custodial crew in team supports and assists with established recycling efforts. Responds to urgent and situation-specific custodial needs. Attend to unsafe conditions such as mopping up spills and responding to calls for clean-up of body fluids in accordance with the OSHA standard for exposure control to blood borne pathogens. Observe safety rules and regulations; identify & report safety issues, posting warning signs as needed. Monitors lobbies and service restrooms during events; ensuring the highest level of cleanliness, patron satisfaction and event success. Use proper supplies to perform daily tasks and report when additional supplies are needed. Reports any unsafe conditions or incidents of suspicious activity or persons. As well as any maintenance repair issues to appropriate area supervisor. Safe and proper use of cleaning agents. Maintains awareness and knowledge of all health and safety regulations and procedures pertaining to custodial operations; follows LU and OSHA health and safety rules, procedures, and standards. Undertakes occasional seasonal tasks such as shoveling snow from the sidewalk. All other duties as assigned. Remains abreast of existing and emerging technologies, process, products, services and leading industry performance benchmarks. Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU's mission. QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS Education and Experience
- This position requires a high school degree or GED. 1-3 years of related experience preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Must be courteous, detailed oriented. self-motivated, diligent, trustworthy, possess strong organizational skills and well-developed communication skills.
- Must be able to lift to 50+ pounds and perform duties of the Custodial trade in typical Virginia Climate and in an indoor/ outdoor setting.
- Experience with residential, and/ or commercial/ industrial cleaning (methods and safety) field is preferred.
- Working knowledge of safe and efficient operation of electrically and propane powered and manual cleaning equipment. Must be willing to be trained and follow directions.
- Ability to carry out written instructions and implement tasks, as well as be able to bend, crouch, kneel, stand, and walk for long periods of time.

WORKING CONDITIONS Work Environment
- The working environment in which one will typically perform the essential functions of this position is a climate-controlled, interior setting. It is well lighted, and the noise level is moderate.
- All waste and recyclable material must be removed from the facilities and carried to exterior waste receptacles throughout the day, regardless of weather conditions.
- On occasion, employees must be able and willing to work in exterior, non-climate-controlled settings, on occasion, such as athletic/special events and special projects.
- Employees routinely clean demolition and construction areas. These areas are often very dusty and not climate controlled. Strong odors are often present from paint, carpet, or other construction products.
- Employees may be exposed to blood borne pathogens, on occasion.
- Employees can expect to have to work on slippery floor surfaces.
