New Mexico School for the Deaf is an Equal Opportunity Employer/Affirmative Action EmployerPosition Title: Custodian IReports to: Lead CustodianService Area: Santa Fe, NMEmployment Status: Non-exempt; Full Time; 12 monthSalary/Wage Range:$17.00-$21.00- Depends on qualifications and experience.SummaryUnder the direction of the Lead Custodian, performs a variety of cleaning work in assigned offices, classrooms, restrooms, or other buildings; assists in maintenance activities and performs other related duties as assigned. It is anticipated and expected that all functions of this position will be performed in a positive and receptive manner, while helping to advance the mission and vision of New Mexico School for the Deaf.Essential Duties and Responsibilities Include the Following (Other duties may be assigned.)
  • Cleans assigned school facilities, keeping them safe, and free of obstructions.
  • Washes windows, door panels, and sills.
  • Keep the buildings neat, clean, and safe for the purpose of conducting school activities.
  • Replace light bulbs.
  • Ensure all doors, windows, and other areas of the building(s) are in good condition and can be secured at the end of a day's use.
  • Vacuum and sweep thoroughly all assigned rooms, corridors, halls, and offices at least once each day. Floors should be stripped and waxed as needed throughout the school year.
  • Mop restroom floors, clean and disinfect fixtures, clean mirrors and stalls, check paper and hand soap daily.
  • Observe and make suggestions for repairs, alterations, changes, and equipment as needed in the school.
  • Report safety, sanitary, and fire hazards.
  • Empties wastebaskets, and transports trash and waste to disposal area.
  • Replenishes bathroom supplies.
  • Comply with all NMSD policies as they apply to this job assignment.

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.Education and/or Experience: Less than high school education; or up to one month related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Proficiency in American Sign Language or willingness to learn.Sign Language: Sign language skills at hire are preferred. The applicant does not need to have sign language skills at hire but will be required to demonstrate progressive sign language acquisition and participate in sign language classes offered at NMSD. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.Mathematical Skills: Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand and use hands to finger, handle, or feel.
