DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Work in this class involves responsibility for performing a variety of tasks in the cleaning and minor maintenance of City buildings, facilities and grounds. Assignments are received orally from the Facilities Manager who may inspect work while in progress and upon completion. Job Duties Clean offices, buildings, conference rooms, hallways, stairways, elevator and related areas; and carpeting. Mop, sweep, strip, wax, buff and vacuum floors. Polish metal work, and dust, wax, wash and polish furniture and woodwork.Wash and clean walls, windows, stairs and handrails. Empty trash cans, and dispose of waste products and recycle materials.Pick up paper, trash and other debris around buildings and grounds. Open and lock facilities and ensure building security. Operate small snow blower and shovel snow. Move small furniture.Clean and sanitize restroom facilities, sinks, toilets and floors. Perform minor repairs to buildings and equipment, such as changing light bulbs, adjusting thermostats, etc. Raise and lower flags. Provide information to the public. Record maintenance and cleaning activities. Report issues of faulty equipment. Assist with room/building preparation for meetings or events. Qualifications ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the custodial methods, practices, cleaning tools and materials, soaps, mild caustics, floor wax and strippers used for maintaining and cleaning buildings, equipment and grounds; OSHA and City requirements related to blood borne pathogens and right-to-know rules; and the occupational hazards and safety precautions related to the maintenance and cleaning of buildings, facilities and grounds. Skilled at utilizing and caring for the tools and equipment necessary to perform various maintenance and cleaning tasks; and maintaining effective working relationships with employees and the general public.Ability to handle a variety of tasks without close supervision; and follow oral and written instructions and directions. WORK CONDITIONS: Duties include working outside during inclement weather; exposure to dust, dirt and electrical hazards; use of chemicals and cleaning compounds; moving furniture, equipment and objects weighing up to 50 pounds assisted or unassisted; climbing stairs and ladders; travel to various work locations; and standing for extended periods of time. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:Possession of a high school diploma or its equivalent; Or any equivalent combination of experience and training. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid state-issued Driver's License. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:Experience in custodial and building maintenance. Supplemental Information RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT: Employee shall establish their principal place of residence within thirty (30) miles of their place of employment as soon as practicable after appointment, but within two years of appointment.
