Under immediate or general supervision, the part-time custodian will perform various types of manual, skilled and semi-skilled tasks involved in the cleaning of River Edge public buildings and park buildings. Will also perform other related duties as assigned and as needed. Candidate must have at least two years of prior cleaning experience, be customer service oriented and be able to lift a minimum of 50lbs. This is a part-time position for up to 29 hours per week. Must also be available on weekends and during Borough events. The successful candidate must undergo a background check.

Under direction of the Superintendent of the Department of Public Works, performs custodian work involved in cleaning, and maintenance of all borough buildings and offices; does related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Organizes assigned housekeeping and related work and develops effective work methods for a group of employees engaged in general institution household work.
Plans and organizes, work involved in scrubbing, waxing, and polishing floors and linoleum, in washing woodwork, in vacuuming rugs and carpets, in dusting, in polishing furniture, in hanging curtains, and in other tasks concerned in maintaining dwelling places and other areas in a clean and orderly condition.
Responsible for the cleaning, dusting, and polishing of furniture, woodwork, and office areas, the emptying and cleaning of waste receptacles, and the general cleaning of floors, stairways, hallways, restrooms, offices, and lobbies.
Responsible for the cleaning of and reports damages to window shades, Venetian blinds, and light fixtures.
Responsible for the moving and placement of furniture.
Maintain and clean jail cells.
Ensures that nickel and brass work, doorknobs, and plates are kept in a clean and polished condition.
Ensures that doors and windows are locked, that lights are turned out, and light bulbs are replaced when required.
Ensures that vacuum cleaners, scrubbers, buffers, waxers, and other equipment and machinery are properly used, adjusted, and maintained.
Receives complaints and where possible makes necessary adjustments or reports the complaint to the proper supervisor.
Reports unsafe conditions and unusual occurrences to the proper supervisor.
Periodically makes inspections of borough buildings, offices, restrooms, and other areas to ensure that proper housekeeping, safety, and sanitary standards are being maintained.
Prepares simple reports of time, materials, supplies, and equipment.
Maintains housekeeping records and files.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information
systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
Experience in industrial housekeeping work.
Education to completion of the twelfth grade or G.E.D. equivalent.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a
vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of institution housekeeping routines.
Knowledge of housekeeping tools and equipment.
Ability to follow basic instructions and carry through on assignments.
Ability to work harmoniously with fellow workers and with the public.
Ability to perform manual labor involving lifting, dragging, turning, standing, bending, carrying, and
stretching, often under adverse climatic conditions for extended periods.
Ability to work under adverse weather conditions and in time of emergencies.
Ability to plan, organize, and carry out housekeeping work and develop effective work methods.
Ability to recognize potentially unsafe conditions and situations and report these to the proper supervisor.
Ability to prepare reports of time, costs, and supplies.
Ability to maintain housekeeping records and files.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
