Full Job DescriptionBishop Woodcraft is seeking a talented and experienced Custom Stair Installer to join our team. As a Custom Stair Installer, you will be responsible for the precise construction and installation of staircases in both residential and commercial settings. You will work with high-quality materials, ensuring the craftsmanship meets the design aesthetic and structural requirements of each project. This is a hands-on role requiring strong carpentry skills, attention to detail, and adherence to safety and building standards. Each project is designed to reflect the unique personality and vision of its clients, ensuring the highest level of craftsmanship and quality.Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Measurement and Planning:
    • Understand blueprints, drawings, and design specifications to plan staircase layouts.
    • Assess site conditions and coordinate setup, power supply, and material storage.
  • Material Selection:
    • Compare materials with work orders to ensure correct species and type.
    • Inspect materials for defects and ensure they meet quality standards.
  • Fabrication:
    • Cut, shape, and assemble stair components such as treads, risers, balusters, and handrails using wood or metal components.
    • Utilize tools such as saws, drills, and routers for component preparation.
  • Installation:
    • Ensure the rise and run of the stairs meet code requirements.
    • Install components securely and accurately, adhering to building codes and safety standards.
  • Inspection and Quality Assurance:
    • Conduct quality checks throughout the installation process to meet AWI and company standards.
    • Perform a final inspection to ensure structural integrity and aesthetics, addressing any issues promptly.
  • Safety Compliance:
    • Follow all safety guidelines and wear appropriate safety gear, including protective eye and hearing protection.
    • Adhere to local building codes and safety standards to prevent accidents.
  • Customer Interaction:
    • Maintain clear, respectful communication with clients, site foremen, and other subcontractors.
    • Report issues or deviations to the Project Manager and avoid communicating problems directly to clients.
  • Problem Solving:
    • Adapt to unexpected challenges and resolve issues during the installation process.
    • Be flexible and work collaboratively with other subcontractors as necessary.
The ideal candidate should possess:
  • Preferably 5+ years of experience in building custom stairs and railing installation and high-end-finish carpentry experience is required.
  • In-depth knowledge of building codes, safety regulations, and wood species.
  • Proficiency in using hand and power tools, including saws, chisels, and sanding equipment.
  • Strong ability to measure, cut, and install materials with precision.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Physical ability to lift heavy materials and work in various site conditions.
  • Strong communication skills and a positive, problem-solving attitude.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Sound knowledge of proper layout, gluing processes, and design of stair components.
