Purpose
This position involves advanced, responsible customer service work. The employee provides assistance and information to the public. While knowledge in building plans review, permit issuance, and planning/zoning is preferred, it is not required. The complexity and level of responsibility in the work may vary.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Input data from permit applications into the permitting system to determine the necessary reviews, project schedules, review statuses, review durations, costs, permit numbers, and issue dates.
- File plans for residential and commercial projects while ensuring the appropriate data is recorded.
- Receive permit applications, review and input relevant data, and forward them to plans reviewers.
- Verify issued permits against the original applications.
- Confirm contractors' business licenses and insurance coverage.
- Respond to technical questions regarding requirements for submitting various permit applications.
- Assist builders, contractors, and property owners with permit applications, advising them on necessary requirements.
- Provide updates on permit progress and inform applicants of any additional data or submissions required.
- Review applications/plans for completeness and confirm all required items are included.
- Ensure permit applicants have obtained all necessary pre-approvals, such as Land Use Compliance Certification, Solid Waste, City Utilities, Environmental, and Concurrency approvals.
- Review permit application forms for completeness and confirm that all required documents are attached.
- Coordinate or oversee applications for specific permits, such as roofing, mobile home setups, pool permits, and environmental permits.
- Determine and calculate various permit fees, including plan review fees, and collect payments.
- Process all applications, plans, and re-submittals received by mail.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- Assist junior staff in processing permit applications for plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and gas construction. Log plans and permit information.
Education, Experience, and Licensing
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two years of customer service experience or a combination of equivalent education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to interact with the public in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner.
- Proficiency in basic mathematical skills, including calculations for square footage and linear feet.
- Ability to learn and utilize computer systems related to permitting, such as GIS and EnerGov.
