Responsibilities:
A Cytotechnologist I performs cytological procedures and examination and any other such tests including maintaining equipment and records and performing quality assurance activities related to examination performance, and which require the exercise of independent judgment and responsibility, as determined by the Department.
A Cytotechnologist provides prompt and accurate laboratory test results on cytological specimens to providers and internal departments. Prepares samples for examination and performs testing following established procedures. Correlates knowledge and understands theory and technical elements of testing to solve problems and answer questions effectively and efficiently.
- Performs and verifies (reports) cytological tests on acceptable specimens to obtain accurate data in accordance with established procedures and protocols and in a timely manner.
- Performs microscopic screening of cytological specimens following established procedures within the established turn round time, utilizing the laboratory information system as appropriate.
- Verifies work of cytopreparatory technician. Prepares slides on acceptable specimens for microscopic examination and performs manual and automatic staining procedures in accordance to established protocols in a timely manner.
- Maintains laboratory equipment, instruments, reagents and/or supplies and documentation required. Follows all institution and ddepartment policies and procedures.
- Performs quality control processes.
- Understands the role and responsibilities of individual members as part of the healthcare team including their ability to promote the delivery of quality healthcare.
- Maintains a clean and orderly work environment.
- Performs other duties within their scope of practice.
Qualifications:
Education:
- 4 year / Bachelor's Degree in Cytotechnology from a cytotechnology program, or professional training programs offered through either the military service of the United States or the military service of the state which may, where applicable, be accepted by the NYS Education Department for licensing purposes as equivalent education and training in lieu of all or part of an approved program, required
- Candidates must be qualified as a Cytotechnologist in accordance with New York State Department of Health regulations
Experience:
- Experience in standard laboratory methodologies, required
- Previous Clinical Laboratory experience, preferred
Licensure/Certificates:
- Cytotechnologist License, required

Physical Requirements:
- Sedentary Work - Exerting up to 10 lbs of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking or standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
