Job Description:

The National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) is inviting applications for the position of Data Center Department Head. NERSC's mission is to accelerate scientific discovery through high performance computing and data analysis for the DOE Office of Science programs. NERSC provides critical HPC and data systems and support for NERSC's 10,000 users researching alternative energy sources, climate science, energy efficiency, environmental science and other DOE mission areas. NERSC is seeking an inspiring leader for the Data Center Department who will provide vision and guidance during this time of transition to exascale architectures and beyond.

The Data Center Department contains the Storage Systems, Security, Network, Operations Technology, and Building Infrastructure Groups, a department of about 35 technical staff members. The Department Head will provide vision and guidance to the department, based on the NERSC strategic plan and division goals. Overall responsibilities of the department include monitoring and maintaining NERSC facilities, 24x7, including HPC data storage systems, networking, and cybersecurity within NERSC. The Data Center Department works closely with the Computational Systems and Infrastructure groups to assure all HPC systems are closely monitored, with problems quickly reported and addressed.

What You Will Do:

  • Serve as a key member of NERSC's leadership team to set strategic directions for NERSC and influence the direction of the HPC industry on a large scale, nation-wide basis.
  • Provide vision and strategic direction for the Data Center Department.
  • Communicate with stakeholders within the Department of Energy Office of Science.
  • Ensure NERSC's HPC systems operate efficiently 24X7 with minimal interruption and NERSC's operational metrics are met.
  • Coordinate operational maintenance and upgrade activities across all the NERSC Departments.
  • Coordinate Data Center activities with the LBNL Facilities Division and other Operational Divisions at the lab.
  • Provide effective line management for the department by hiring excellent staff and conducting performance management. Assure staff are meeting goals and provide both positive and constructive feedback to staff and keep them motivated.
  • Foster positive work relationships and resolve technical and personal conflicts with diplomacy and tact.
  • Play a key leadership role in designing and deploying advanced technology supercomputers.
  • Interact internally and externally with executive level management, requiring negotiation of extremely critical matters. Influence policy making.
  • Oversee preparation for DOE and UC-sponsored program reviews, and act as a peer-reviewer for other organizations.
  • Maintain a work environment that embraces diversity and fosters creativity and innovation.
  • Ensure that DOE and Laboratory rules and policies are observed.

What is Required:

  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent related experience) in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Computational Science (or related fields) and a minimum of 12 years related experience and 5 years in a supervisory role.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas: HPC systems operations, large data center management and monitoring, data center cybersecurity, or data center network architecture and management.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team-oriented organization and attract, retain and develop a talented and diverse staff.
  • Ability to foster positive work relationships and resolve technical and personal conflicts with diplomacy and tact.
  • Proven track record managing large organizations and/or complex projects.
  • Ability to gather requirements from the user community and turn requirements into system and software solutions.
  • Experience building and maintaining very strong working relationships and partnerships.
  • Broad operations and systems background, including knowledge of HPC center facility needs.
  • Ability to travel to meetings, workshops and conferences.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time, career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • The full salary range of this position is between $193,608 to $326,700 per year and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $217,800 to $266,196 per year depending upon candidates' full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

  • This position requires substantial on-site presence, but is eligible for a flexible work mode, and hybrid schedules may be considered. Hybrid work is a combination of performing work on-site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA and some telework. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab. Work schedules are dependent on business needs.
