Job Summary The Data Scientist is responsible for analyzing large volumes of data to extract actionable insights that drive Steel Point's strategic objectives and enhance business capabilities. This role involves developing data models, performing statistical analyses, and creating data visualizations to inform decision-making. The Data Scientist will collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand business needs, develop data-driven solutions, and ensure the successful implementation of data analytics projects. Key Responsibilities
- Data Analysis and Modeling
- Analyze complex datasets to identify trends, patterns, and insights.
- Develop and implement predictive models and algorithms.
- Conduct exploratory data analysis to inform business decisions.
- Statistical Analysis
- Perform statistical analyses to support business objectives.
- Ensure the accuracy and validity of data analyses and models.
- Data Visualization
- Create and present data visualizations to communicate insights effectively.
- Develop dashboards and reports for stakeholders.
- Collaboration
- Work with business stakeholders to understand data requirements and objectives.
- Collaborate with data engineers, analysts, and other team members to develop data solutions.
- Data Management
- Ensure data quality, integrity, and security in all data activities.
- Manage and preprocess data for analysis and modeling.
- Continuous Improvement
- Stay updated with the latest advancements in data science and analytics.
- Implement best practices and innovative techniques in data analysis.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Atmospheric Science, Meteorology, Climate/Earth Systems Science, or similar fields
- 3+ years of meteorological data experience
- retrieval and processing of large reanalysis and forecast datasets, creation of derived meteorological variables and analyses from raw data (e.g., CAPE, wind shear, heat index), quality control of weather data
- Experience with statistical and machine learning models, demand prediction, just-in-time delivery modeling and WRF modeling
- Ability to work with large, multi-dimensional data (e.g., netCDF, GRIB, TIFF files)
- Knowledge of weather forecasting and analysis, hazardous event forcasting (e.g., severe thunderstorms, wildfires, lake-effect snow) required
- Python knowledge and experience required
- Willingness to travel up to 20-40% to Silver Spring, MD
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in in Atmospheric Science, Meteorology, Climate/Earth Systems Science, or a related field is preferred.
- Data science-related certifications (e.g., Certified Data Scientist, Microsoft Certified: Data Scientist Associate) are preferred
- Experience working with Linux and command line scripting (i.e., bash, zsh), and familiarity with cloud computing environments highly preferred
- Experience with xarray and knowledge of basic software engineering principles highly preferred

The salary range represents a general guideline; however, Steel Point Solutions considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
