Job Description:
Job title: Database Administrator Locations: Fairfax, VA (Hybrid 3 days on-site 2 days Remote) Client: DOI Long Term Contractual Role 3 to 5 years Performs a variety of tasks that require both practical experience and theoretical, state-of-the-art, technical knowledge. Roles and Responsibilities Collaboration
  • Work closely with ES FWS DDI (Ecological Services - Fish and Wildlife Service - Data division) management in developing and executing a strategic plan for our EDW (Enterprise Datawarehouse) to align with current platform cloud migration objectives and goals
  • Work with DDI staff to ensure integration of data for various sources into the EDW, ensuring data quality, and consistency.
  • Coordinate with multiple teams, including interfacing with engineering and project teams
  • Work with US FWS staff, contractors, and vendors to build, manage, and maintain a solid EDW (Enterprise Datawarehouse), Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) processes, and automations
  • Collaborate with USFWS stakeholders to understand their reporting and analytical needs and to provide solutions that enable them to access and analyze data effectively
Database Management:
  • Manage database maintenance and modification activities for the current legacy on-prem platform and support cloud migration efforts
  • Work with DDI staff to ensure integration of data for various sources into the ES EDW, ensuring data quality, and consistency
  • Manage the ETL processes to extract data from various source systems, transform it into the required format, and load its data into the ES EDW
  • Design and enforce database standards, policies, and quality control measures
  • Ensure data integrity, reliability, and overall database health
Backup and Recovery
  • Develop and implement database backup, recovery and archiving, and storage strategies
  • Design and execute data collection, staging, moving, and reporting strategies
  • Administer database objects for optimal utilization, including performance tuning and indexing
Security and compliance
  • Ensure proper implementation of DDI data governance and security measures to protect our data and to ensure compliance with DOI/USFWS/ES/ DDI security regulations
  • Identify and address database security issues, manage audit trials
  • Assist in the remediation of security findings and collaborate with systems engineers as needed
Coordination & Reporting
  • Troubleshoot database-related issues, collaborating with engineering teams for resolution
  • Design and maintain service-level alarms and monitor service-related KPIs
Professional Experience
  • Proven experience managing and leading database activities and maintaining database standards
  • Experience managing cloud database resources
  • Experience in SQL, T-SQL, Stored Procedures, Functions (SQL Server and PostgreSQL)
  • Experience on use and implementation of data integration and automation tools
  • Experience with the following Databases: PostgreSQL, MySQL
  • Experience with Elasticsearch
  • Experience with FME software and automation processes.
  • Experience with the following for version controls:
    • Git (GitHub, Bitbucket, GitLab).
  • Experience with the following Operating systems:
    • Windows, Linux.
  • Experience with any of these following Cloud technologies:
    • CI/CD Pipeline, Containers (Docker/Pod man)
    • Public cloud (AWS)
    • Kubernetes
    • Microservices
    • S3 Buckets.
Technical Skills:
  • Hands-on experience with database standards and end-user applications
  • Excellent knowledge of database backup, recovery, security, integrity, and SQL
  • Familiarity with database design, documentation, and coding best practices
  • Experience with DBA case tools and programming languages API
  • Experience designing, building, and maintaining complex, mission-critical EDWs by striving for build and test automation, keeping it simple , following industry best-practices, and embracing an agile, test-driven development environment.

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information systems and or related experience
  • strong desire to work collaboratively as part of a dynamic and creative team

  • Proven ability to offer creative software solutions to complicated and complex challenges.
