Position Summary:

The Assistant Camp Director, under minimal supervision, provides an effective day camp program by directly supporting the Administrative Team and Camp Director, supervising and supporting Unit Leaders and Unit Counselors, managing all unit and camper needs, aiding to the growth and development of all staff members, and assisting with planning, development and implementation of camp logistics, program, and staff trainings. The Assistant Camp Director assumes full responsibility of summer camp operations during the absence of the Camp Director.

Major Accountabilities:

* Performs assigned duties and delegated responsibilities by the Camp Director, for the overall administration and general camp operations following State of CT Laws and Regulations, ACA Standards and Girl Scout Safety Activity Checkpoints, with an emphasis on age-appropriate and session specific programs.

* In the absence of the Camp Director, the Assistant Director shall be familiar with all of the activities offered at the camp during the period of the camp license and have immediate access to all records and facilities utilized for all activities offered during camping season.

* In the absence of the Camp Director, the Assistant Director is responsible for the supervision of the campers at all times while the campers are at camp.

* Oversee the day camp operations and works closely with the Program Director, as applicable, in planning and implementing Camp Program on a daily basis.

* Works in conjunction with the Unit Leaders and Program Instructors to create weekly schedules for girl driven, safe, creative and educational program for campers.

* Ensure all staff are following and enforcing all rules as well as fulfilling all expectations and their assigned duties.

* Formally evaluate all program staff twice a summer

* Plans and provides a camp atmosphere of high staff morale.

* Develop routines and schedules for camp operation throughout the camp season as necessary for enrollment and/or staffing to ensure girl to adult ratio compliance, work periods and time-off.

* Correct and document, as necessary, behavioral, physical situations that may/may not affect the emotional or physical safety of any person on GSOFCT camp property.

* Maintain positive public relations with parents, visitors and the general public at all times.

* Assist Camp Director in pre-camp preparations.

* Works directly with Area Specialists/Directors to provide assistance and support in developing activities that will engage and stimulate campers of all ages.

* Works directly with campers when behavior issues happen. Coaches staff to work with girls with different learning styles.

* Be visible and positive during all interaction with staff and campers daily.

* Enact camp emergency procedures when warranted.

* Be calm, capable and adept when responding to emergencies and situations requiring First Aid and CPR.

* Supervises, guides and leads Unit Leaders and Counselors by delegating work assignments and guiding staff in their performance.

* Conducts staff meetings with unit leaders for sharing ideas and plans for unit programs.

* Conducts supervisory conferences and performance evaluation for staff while clearly communicating performance expectations.

* Maintains health and safety standards for campers, unit staff and staff.

* Maintains ongoing communication with the Director of First Aid regarding the health status of campers and unit staff.

* Reports accidents and files incident reports promptly.

* Participates in all regular camp activities such as meals, flag ceremonies, all-camp activities, cookouts, and kapers.

* Keeps records and prepares written reports as requested.

* Reports needed repairs of equipment and facilities to the Camp Director.

* Coordinates and facilitates regularly scheduled meetings and trainings to ensure open and positive communication.

* Participates in opening and closing procedures of the camp season.

* Assist the campers and staff in emergency situations.

* Keeps the Camp Director, and unit staff informed of activities, problems and concerns on an ongoing basis.

* Maintains professional camper/staff relationships. Assures professional staff conduct is maintained (camper/staff relationships) throughout the camp season.

* Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Competencies:

* Must be at 21 years of age or older

* Bachelor's degree preferred

* Minimum of 2 seasons working at a summer camp

* Commitment to the Girl Scout approach to outdoor education and experiential learning

* Strong leadership abilities

* Show the willingness to abide by the policies and practices of Girl Scouts of Connecticut.

* Valid driver's license

* Qualify as a Youth Camp Director with the state of Connecticut

* First Aid/CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and Medication Administration Certification must be obtained upon being hired

* Possess experience which relates to job responsibilities including successful experience in outdoor programs, management of children and staff, and communication skills.

* Demonstrates good judgment in anticipating and preventing accidents and possess the ability to make sound decisions in a crisis.

* Writes clearly, tactfully and effectively, demonstrating strong grammar and usage skills

* Enthusiasm, energy and a positive presence as a role model

* Working knowledge of computer software, word processing, and database operations

Physical Aspects of the Job:

* Ability to effectively communicate orally.

* Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds.

* Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards of the site and facilities and camper and staff behavior. Ability to provide first aid and to assist campers and staff in an emergency with a clear and level head
