DescriptionMAIN FUNCTION:The Coordinator performs the primary functions of a professional nurse leader in assessing, planning, directing and evaluating patient care in the Nursing Unit.He/she collaborates with the Unit Manager to manage personnel and supplies for the units and for promoting teamwork with physicians and personnel of other nursing units and nursing support services. The role includes coordinating and managing all nursing care activities based on the philosophy of the Arnot Health to partner with each person we serve in order to maximize their physical, emotional, social and spiritual health, using initiative and independent judgment to provide the best available services to our patients and families. In the absence of and in collaboration with the Unit Director, the Unit clinical Coordinator is accountable for patient care activities, department operations and staff function.In conjunction with centralized and decentralized educators, assist with the coordination of orientation and teaching of new employees and ongoing in-service programs.Supports the Unit Director in carrying out unit goals, and is the representative of the Unit Director.Informs the Unit Director of activities in the department, including customer service and quality improvement issues. Reports to the Unit Director.NATURE AND SCOPE:1.Reports to the Unit Director and assumes responsibility for the Coordination of nursing, clerical and assistant.2.Oversees personnel, equipment, supplies and unit environment to meet unit goals.3.Collaborates with the Unit Director for labor and non-labor budget control, enforcement and compliance of staff.4.Assists the Unit Director with monthly staff meetings and documentation of minutes and ongoing interdepartmental communication.5.Assists the Unit Director with departmental Quality Improvement activities through interaction with staff and delegation to them as appropriate.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Nursing Process 1.The Nursing Unit Clnical Coordinators for ICU, 4A/4B/Floats, 5D, provides 50% administrative duties per pay period and 50% direct patient care per pay period as scheduled and as needed based on patient acuity and staffing needs. The Nursing Unit Clinical Coordinators for 2B, 3B/3C, 4D, provides 30% administrative duties per pay period and 70% direct patient care per pay period as scheduled and as needed based on patient acuity and staffing needs.2.Assigns patient care responsibilities based on four (4) general considerations including the patient environment, staff competency and the amount of supervision required/available.3.Supervises all nursing activities related directly and indirectly to patient care.4.Evaluates effectiveness of patient care in progressing patient toward outcomes. Knowledge Base 1.Demonstrates sound knowledge base, skill level and decision making related to area of practice. Patient/Staff Education 1.Collaborates with Unit Director and Department of Education in assessing and planning educational programs for staff, patients and families. Documentation 1.Is role model in documentation based on the nursing process.2.Participates in auditing, documentation and competency/compliance and provides staff education accordingly. Safety/Legal 1.Oversees scheduling of staff and scheduling of daily patient procedures.2.Demonstrates awareness of and adherence to safety and legal requirements established at the Medical Center and Division of Nursing level with emphasis on those pertinent to his/her unit.3.Assists the Unit Director in assessing patient population that are at increased risks and intervenes appropriately.Committee Work1.Participates in unit based, Division of Nursing and Arnot Health committees. Policy 1.Assists the Unit Director in development and enforcement of unit, Division of Nursing and Arnot Healthpolicies. Quality Assurance 1.Assists the Unit Director in evaluating nursing care on the unit for quality, appropriateness and economy.2.Assists the Unit Director with annual and ongoing performance evaluations of unit employees.3.Assists the Unit Director with maintaining supplies and equipment status, budget development and ensuring accurate charges.4.Maintains a good knowledge base of DNV, NYS DOH, and evidence based practice standards and other regulatory requirements and ensures unit compliance with the standards. Working Relationships 1.Develops and maintains effective working relationships with the staff nurse, Unit Director, providers and other members of the health team. Leadership 1.Is able to delegate and coordinate effectively.2.Is a resource person for the nursing staff; assisting in development of the staff.3.Performs competently in emergencies and new situations. Problem Solving 1.Is able to problem solve and facilitate problem solving in other staff.2.Investigates/follows up on complaints and incidents when needed or in the absence of the Unit Director. Education 1.Assumes responsibility for meeting self-learning needs using formal and informal resources.2.Oversees personal Standards and Development:3.Serves as a professional role model for staff by maintaining knowledge and expertise to the clinical area.Demonstrates leadership and availability to nursing staff.4.Demonstrates awareness of the need for self-growth by assessing strengths and weaknesses and establishing a plan to address them.5.Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in the department.6.Consistently strives to be and effective and productive member of the department and the Medical Center.7.Demonstrates effective time management, flexibility and priority setting.Recognizes priorities and deals with them appropriately.Able to perform duties in an independent manner with little or no direct supervision.8.Assumes the responsibility for personal growth and development by participating in continuing education programs.9.Demonstrates appropriate problem solving and decision making skills.10.Participates in nursing/Arnot Healthand unit committees as appropriate. Other 1.Is responsible for attending all annual mandatory educational programs as required by position.2.Provides age appropriate care to patient according to their age groups for the particular unit to which the individual is assigned.3.Employee understands and demonstrates the importance of satisfying the needs of the customer/patient by interacting with him/her in a friendly and caring way, being attentive to the customer's needs, both psychologically and physically, and by taking the initiative to maintain communication with the customer in order to provide a secure and pleasant experience with the Medical Center.4.It is understood that this job description lists typical duties for the classification and is not considered inclusive of all duties which may be assigned.EDUCATION: Current NYS nursing licensure. BSN preferred, strongly recommended.MSN preferred.EXPERIENCE:Meets Medical Center employment criteria. Minimum 5 years experience in acute hospital setting. Clinical Nurse II or Advanced Clinical Nurse level of the clinical ladder preferredCARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR) REQUIREMENTS:Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 90 days of hire date. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required within 90 days for telemetry and critical care areas.PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Appreciable physical effort required.Some lifting, reaching and stooping.Required to be on feet much of the time.INFECTION CONTROL:Performs all aspects of universal precautions when engaging in patient care.EXPOSURE CATEGORY:Category I.Tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues.** A.D.A Essential Functions#LI-TC1
