The Dean reports directly to the Provost and will work closely with faculty to maintain and enhance high-quality academic programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels and to foster an innovative environment in which students and faculty are engaged with their disciplines, resulting in graduates who are equipped to have a positive impact in the region, the nation, and the world. The College of Business maintains AACSB accreditation and has undergraduate business programs in Professional Accountancy and Business Administration with the following specializations: accounting, economics, entrepreneurial studies, health services administration, human resources management, management, and marketing. The College of Business also offers an MBA in applied management. At the present time there are nearly 400 students in business programs. Black Hills State University is a masters-level state university with more than 3,300 students. The campus leads the region in sustainability efforts and maintains top academic programs in business, exercise science, natural sciences, behavioral sciences, social sciences, the arts, mass communication, health sciences, and education. The University, founded in 1883, is located in the northern Black Hills, a region abundant with outdoor activity and culture. Spearfish, SD is recognized as one of the top-10 most livable small towns in the USA and has also been recognized nationally for outdoor recreational opportunities. A second location, BHSU-RC, is in Rapid City, the state's second-largest city and the fastest growing city in the Midwest. BHSU, a member of NCAA Division II athletics, offers 14 sports, and has a legacy of champion rodeo teams. QualificationsThe successful candidate will have a terminal degree in business or a related discipline, a distinguished record of accomplishments in the areas of teaching, research, and service, as well as evidence of strong leadership that includes a record of progressively more responsible administrative experience and budget management. The finalist must also have excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills, and a demonstrated commitment to inclusive excellence and personal and professional integrity. The person in this position must have a working knowledge of the current accreditation standards of AACSB. Past participation in writing accreditation-related reports or participating in peer review team visits is preferred. Position ResponsibilitiesGenerally, the Dean is expected to:
- Provide transformative leadership and advocacy for the College of Business at Black Hills State University.
- Work collegially and collaboratively with leadership across campus to support the priorities of the University.
- Foster an environment of innovation, collegiality, collaboration, and support where faculty, staff, and students thrive.
- Assure ongoing quality and improvement in College of Business academic programs through the review and assessment of existing programs and the development of new academic program opportunities and projects when appropriate.
Primary Duties
- Lead College of Business efforts related to the ongoing maintenance of AACSB accreditation in line with the College's mission and vision. This will include:
- Working with the College's AACSB Committees and the preparation of annual / continuous improvement reports;
- Supporting the assessment efforts and strategies in the College of Business;
- Providing leadership to the Business Advisory Board and fostering board engagement with the College of Business both internally and externally;
- Leading initiatives that foster and enhance inclusive excellence and multicultural and global competence in the College of Business; and
- Active engagement in the state, regional, and local business communities to help deliver programs, encourage/support business and economic activity, and foster collaboration.
- Oversee the College of Business efforts to enhance the program's visibility and reputation.
- Provide leadership and mentorship to a faculty of 15 dedicated professionals.
- Perform annual evaluation of faculty and staff performance.
- Review faculty, staff and student grievances and petitions within the College of Business.
- Enforce University and College of Business policies with respect to students on academic rules and processes.
- Review full-time and adjunct faculty assignments to College and University committees.
- Review course schedules that serve program and student needs for all courses offered by the College of Business on the main campus, the Rapid City campus, and online.
- Monitor the assignment of both full-time and adjunct faculty to courses taught in undergraduate and graduate programs.
- Monitor course enrollments during registration and provide updates to the Provost on low-enrolled sections.
- Coordinate curriculum and catalog changes and their publication in a timely manner.
- Work with professional student advisors and faculty mentors to ensure proper student advising and degree progress.
- Oversee the MBA program in Applied Management:
- Actively recruit and retain students in the program.
- Work with graduate faculty to advise and mentor students enrolled in the program.
- Work closely with graduate faculty to ensure course and program assessments are completed.
Other Duties
- Work with the Vice President for University Advancement to maintain and cultivate relationships with the alumni and friends of the College of Business in order to secure financial resources through development efforts and initiatives.
- Identify, attract, and strategically manage financial resources for the College of Business (including state appropriations, revenue programs, and private gifts and grants).
- Provide leadership and support to College of Business academic programs at BHSU-Rapid City.
- Represent the College of Business and the University to the state university system and to the community at the local, regional, national, and international levels.
- Represent the College of Business and carry out other duties as assigned by the Provost.
