CHASS has more than 80 full-time faculty and numerous adjunct faculty serving over 800 undergraduate students in more than 12 programs offered by the Departments of Art & Creative Media, English & World Languages, History & Political Science, Media & Entertainment, Music, Psychology, Social Work, and Sociology, Criminology, and Anthropology; and more than 40 graduate students in the Masters of Social Work (MSW) program. The College is proud to offer programs such as Chicano/a Studies, Military Science, Creative Wellness, Homeland Security, Media Entertainment, and Translation Studies. The College of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences faculty transform students, innovate in teaching, conduct themselves with professionalism and engage with and positively impact our community. The intellectual pursuits of CHASS faculty reflect the institution's teacher/scholar philosophy which informs instructional development and delivery to provide a holistic and uplifting education. CHASS outreach activities, developed in partnership with the community, serve to enhance the quality of life and economic well-being in Southern Colorado. Description of JobReporting to the Provost, the Dean of the College of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences drives the college's strategic vision, fostering innovation, collaboration, and fiscal responsibility in support of advancing the programs within CHASS. The Dean shall be a leader who understands the unique educational mission of CHASS, the immense variety of CSU Pueblo students and is committed to supporting faculty and staff in their endeavors to meet the college and university missions. This full-time administrative professional position strengthens fundraising efforts, builds community relationships, and champions student success through recruitment, retention, and program analysis. The Dean supports curriculum advancement, ensuring academic excellence and regional distinction in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences programs. By recruiting and mentoring top faculty, the Dean cultivates a culture of trust and professional growth, empowering the faculty and staff of CHASS to excel. This Dean engages with both university and community initiatives, ensuring the college thrives and contributes to the surrounding community and region, including through events at Hoag Recital Hall, Fine Art Gallery, Buell Communication Center, and KTSC-FM.Primary Duties:Works Collaboratively. Develops an Environment of Trust.
  • Provides leadership to the College of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences (CHASS) and strengthens relationships with different stakeholders for CHASS.
  • In collaboration with faculty and staff, develops and cultivates a strategic vision for the college.
  • Effectively advocates to the Provost and University leadership for initiatives in support of CHASS programs, faculty and staff.
  • Communicates the goals, policies and practice of the University and CHASS to faculty, staff, students and community.
  • Collaborates with other deans and the provost on academic policies and procedures, academic concerns and issues, and student retention and recruitment issues.
Supports a Culture of Student Success and Promotes Enrollment Growth:
  • Advocates for teaching excellence and equity in learning and supports initiatives to meet the needs of CSU Pueblo's diverse student body.
  • Supports and leads academic and student success initiatives.
  • Oversees and/or approves the development of appropriate and effective schedules of degree, classes and teaching assignments within CHASS.
  • Supports and leads student recruitment and retention efforts in CHASS.
  • Identifies best practices to increase enrollment through innovative marketing practices in collaboration with Enrollment Management & Extended Studies and Marketing, Communications & Community Relations.
Advances the Curriculum and Quality of Academic Programs:
  • Leads and supports CHASS departments to ensure the highest quality in academic programs.
  • Supports the development and review of curriculum.
  • Stays abreast of best practices and ensures that CHASS maintains active and effective assurance of learning activities.
  • Leads and supports programmatic assessment activities and program review within the college and supports accreditation activities (e.g. Music and Social Work).
  • Supports the assessment activities of the General Education Program courses offered by CHASS.
  • Analyzes data from programs to ensure student success, identifies trends, and develops future plans in collaboration with department chairs and faculty members.
Develops and Advances Professional Development and Recruitment
  • Models appropriate behavior and mentors faculty and professional staff.
  • Supervises department chairs and professional staff.
  • Works with department chairs to determine and develop best practices to attract and retain high quality faculty and staff members.
  • In collaboration with faculty, develops goals, objectives, and performance standards for the College that provide excellence in education and meet the vision of the College's future while promoting a reasonable work-life balance.
  • Facilitates and supports professional development activities in CHASS.
  • Evaluates department chairs, faculty and staff. Provides recommendations for tenure, promotion, and continuation of faculty.
  • Resolves personnel issues in accordance with policy and procedure.
  • Recommends disciplinary action to the Provost when appropriate.
Promotes and Executes Sound Fiscal Management
  • Develops, tracks and is responsible for CHASS budgets.
  • Develops annual operating budgets and ensures that university resources are efficiently allocated and utilized.
  • Monitors and maintains budgetary controls and accountability.
Strengthens Fundraising and Corporate Engagement:
  • Participates in College, University and Community Activities.
  • Strengthens relationships with external community and regional partners.
  • Recruits and cultivates new and continuing external donors for annual giving and endowment.
  • Identifies and supports federal and other external grant writing as well as legislative funding.

  • PhD or terminal degree from an accredited institution in a CHASS or closely related field
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Experience in teaching, research and service sufficient to warrant appointment as a tenured full professor or Associate professor
  • At least five years (5) higher education administrative leadership experience in increasingly responsible positions working with faculty and administration
  • Experience working in a shared governance environment.
  • Experience working in a culturally diverse educational environment
  • Professional experience with building community partnerships and fundraising
  • Experience in budget preparation and fiscal management
Preferred Qualifications
  • An understanding of the Higher Ed environment and an ability to identify emerging trends for students and CHASS
  • Experience with discipline specific accreditation processes (e.g. CSWE, NASM)
  • Experience working with federally licensed broadcast facilities and industry partners
  • Extensive experience developing community partnerships leading to experiential curriculum or experiential opportunities for students
  • Experience with online programs
  • Minimum three years (3) experience at a culturally diverse institution
  • Experience with program accreditation
  • Experience developing strong relationships with community leaders and/or utilizing community advisory boards
  • Experience in strategic planning
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills that model and encourage empathetic and active listening, empowerment, creativity, ownership, work/life balance, and clear and effective communication
  • Experience resolving conflict with positive results
