Job Summary

JOB SUMMARY

The Dean is responsible for coordinating administrative decisions in the school by providing leadership for the Heads for the three departments within the school, namely: Agriculture, Agricultural Education and Communication, and Forest Resources. A significantresponsibility of this position is to provide leadership for the budget process and allocation of resources to the departments in support of the educational programs.

These resources also include the J.G. Woodroof Farm, and cooperative properties owned by public and private entities.

The Dean is responsible for coordinating with Department Heads and faculty members to create, develop, and utilize working relationships with industry and alumni to foster the recruitment, professional development, and placement of students within the School of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

The Dean will coordinate the acquisition of public and private support for agriculture and related programs through grant funding, financial, and in-kind donations, partnerships with industry, cooperation with governmental agencies, and among others to enhance the quality of programs within the school.

MAJOR DUTIES

* Identify and hire outstanding faculty and staff, support their efforts formally and informally, enable them to continue their professional development for the betterment of the School and College and reward them appropriately

* Create and encourage an environment within the school, which inspires and appreciates learning at all levels of ability

* Work to enhance the teacher-student relationship by creating the environment conducive to such ends

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

* Knowledge of Board of Regents policies and procedures

* Knowledge of state and national issues related to higher education

* Knowledge of budget development and management principles

* Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices

* Formal academic training experience

* Stakeholder identification and recruitment

* Effective leadership skills

* Strong management skills

* Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written

* Time management skills

* Ability to prioritize and delegate responsibilities

* Operation of computer skills and job-related software programs

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

* Reports to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs; he/she has the latitude to develop a course of action within the framework of well-defined College practices and policies

* Supervises approximately ~50 full- and part-time faculty and staff

GUIDELINES

Follows all Board of Regents and the University Systems policies and procedures, as well as ABACs practices and policies

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

* The work consists of management duties

* Requires solid leadership and supervisory skills

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

* Work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping

* May occasionally need to lift or move light objects

* Work is usually performed in an office setting

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

* Supervises approximately 50 full- and part-time faculty and staff

* Oversees management of the J.G. Woodroof Farm, Forest Lakes Golf Club, John W. & Martha Jones Langdale Forest, and other cooperative properties owned by public and private entities

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

* Terminal degree in a discipline appropriate to the school

* Combination of formal academic training, experience, stakeholder identification and recruitment, leadership, and management skills are necessary to warrant appointment at the
