The delegating nurse will work closely with the school community to maintain a healthy environment. She/he will provide training to all appropriate school staff regarding issues related to students with special health needs including planning, maintaining a safe environment, and medication administration issues. In addition, they are responsible for the implementation of school health services programs and policies related to students with special needs. Essential Functions:
- Provide first aid, medical care, and emergency care services to students, faculty and staff
- Administer medications and treatments to students as ordered by students' physicians
- Assist in the collection and management of health forms
- Create and maintain documentation of all encounters, assessments, and interventions
- Serve as liaison between students, teachers and families regarding health concerns
- Provide evaluation of competency of Certified Medication Technicians
- Develop initial nursing evaluation and the nursing plan of care
- Available to staff to answer questions concerning medical and/or medication issues
- Perform staff training and retraining as needed/requested
- Assessing the health care needs of the school population
- Being available for adequate supervision of school health plan
- Staff CPR/First Aid training
- Staff Certified Medication Technician training
- Support school administration in following up with families to get forms completed
- Support school with the submission of Maryland State Vaccine Reports
- Form reviews in preparation for all class trips
- Review the medication forms and meds, making sure nothing has expired
- Identify teacher/chaperone to whom you will delegate the administration of medication
- Generate Field Trip medication administration form for paper documentation
- Support the school with following medical provider instructions to create Diabetic/Seizure Action Plan
- Providing general advice to the school regarding best practices around student health services and programs
Position Qualifications:
- Current Maryland RN license - BSN preferred
- Training/experience as Delegating Nurse in Maryland schools is preferred.
- Minimum of 4 years of nursing experience
- Nursing experience in a high school setting
- Current Red Cross or American Heart Association CPR/Basic Life Support certification
- Ability to quickly and competently assess medical situations and escalate as needed
