Position Overview: The position of Demolition Superintendent has the direct responsibility for personnel, equipment, scheduling, safety, quality of workmanship, and completion of assigned projects on time. Typical items of attention:
- Chains and rigging (tagged, inspected, and maintained)
- Torch units (tanks, hoses, wands, tips etc.)
- Drills (units, stands, bits, fittings etc.)
- Radios (inventory, care)
- Saws (service, proper care, maintenance, storage, and usage)
- Blades (inventory, proper size and specification, care, and usage)
- Demolition equipment:
- Hammers
- Processors/Munchers
- Buckets
- Excavators
- Loaders (wheel and skid)
- Manlifts
- Rigging (spreader beams, round slings etc.)
- Equipment trailers (care, maintenance)
- Crew trucks (care, maintenance)
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: • Working knowledge of bridge construction means and methods including experience with Pile Driving, Concrete Forming, Steel or Concrete Beam Erection, Temporary and Permanent Shoring, Cofferdams, Drilled-shaft Foundations, Bridge Deck Forming, Culvert Construction and Concrete Placement. • Understand project budgets and productions to manage personnel and equipment efficiently. • Ability to read and interpret CPM Schedules to plan work, equipment, and manpower needs for assigned projects. • Have a working knowledge of all required plans and specifications. • Knowledge of survey controls, grade checking, and bridge geometry. • Excellent organizational and planning, written and verbal communication, and supervisory skills are required. • Able to read and comprehend simple instruction, short correspondence, and memos. • Able to read plans and proposals • Able to write simple correspondence. • Able to effectively communicate information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and employees. • Ability to deal with problems/issues involving several variable situations. • Experienced working around cranes, lifts, and heavy construction equipment. • Basic computer skills. • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively. • Able to multi-task simultaneously • Able to communicate to crew members in a professional and effective manner. • Able to provide effective professional feedback to team members. • Team Oriented • Safety Oriented • Customer Oriented • Must be 18 years of age • Must be able to pass a pre-employment and random drug screen Physical Demands: • Extensive physical activity performing strenuous daily activities of a primarily productive/technical nature. Includes standing and sitting for extended periods of time, stooping, bending and crouching. • Able to walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions. • Capable of lifting up to 70 pounds. • Visual accuracy under varying degrees of light, darkness, and weather conditions in order to provide safe directions for operators of heavy equipment and other employees. • Able to climb on and off heavy mobile equipment, and in and out of excavations and up to 20 feet in height • Able to work overtime and weekends, if necessary • Able to travel when required. • Requires working from heights Environmental Working Conditions • Outdoor exposure to changing weather conditions (i.e., rain, sun, snow, wind, etc.) • Noise level in the work environment is loud. • Exposure to dust, grease, gasoline, diesel fuel, concrete, and other environmental factors of a construction job site. • Work is performed near heavy equipment and moving machinery. - Ability to develop a daily plan of work, give clear instructions to Foremen and provide assistance to execute the plan.
- Ensures daily equipment inspections are performed and any addressed.
- Coordinates repairs as needed with Smith-Rowe Shop Manager.
- Ensures routine maintenance (lubrication, hose replacement, fuel/hydraulic filter replacement) is performed as needed to maintain a productive fleet of equipment.
- Can safely, effectively, and efficiently operate all Demolition Equipment as well as instruct operation of the equipment.
- Able to read and understand site plans and other plan sheets that impact the Demolition work.
- Ensure Foreman accurately record and report work hours for their Team Members in a timely manner.
- Clearly and effectively communicates with Supervisors, Contractors, Office Personnel and DOT Officials to ensure a good working relationship.
- Has a strong regard for Smith-Rowe equipment and its care and maintenance.
- Able to teach/instruct Team Members.
- Ability to react to developments during the typical workday in a calm and productive manner.
- Ability to work with Supervisor(s) to develop daily and weekly plans for projects.
- Can set daily, weekly, and monthly production goals for the respective Foreman and assist in reaching those goals.
- Performs equipment tasks in a variety of conditions.
- Ability to work in a team environment and as an individual as needed.
- Ability to effectively manage an operation involving the Demolition operations (coordinating the movement of equipment and demolition debris/materials).
- Ability to train, teach and instruct all Team members in the Demolition Division.
- Accepts direction and offers suggestions to perform tasks safely and efficiently.
- Dependable, committed to the Team and task for safe and efficient production.
- Can evaluate potential project sites and assist in developing bids, quotes, and other pricing.
- Has a strong knowledge of various debris management, disposal and recycling of any materials associated with the Demolition operations.
- Has a complete understanding and regard for the environmental impacts and restrictions associated with Demolition work (on NCDOT and other project sites).
- Keeps daily records for all aspects of the projects and ensures there are documented records for all impacts to Smith-Rowe and various projects.
