Columbus Public Health is seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Dental Assistant to join our school-based dental sealant program. As a dental assistant, you will play a critical role in providing dental sealants to children through a mobile setting in schools throughout the City of Columbus. Ideally, this part-time position would work Monday through Friday during the school year, averaging 30 hours per week, and would average about 12 hours per week in the summer. The position work location is in person. Starting Pay Range: $21.12 to $23.47 per hour Preferred Qualifications and Experience: - Completion of a dental assistant training program or certification as a Dental Assistant - Enjoy working with children - Comfortable working in a school-based mobile setting Certification/Training: Certification as a Dental Assistant by Dental Assisting National Board or the Commission on Ohio Dental Assistant Certification OR Completion of a dental assistant training program approved by the Ohio State Board of Career College and Schools or by the American Dental Association. Under immediate supervision, is responsible for providing chair-side dental assistance during the examination and treatment of patients; performs related duties as required. (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.) Readies and maintains the work area to receive each patient; Performs direct, four-handed, chair-side assistance to the operator providing treatment; Provides instruction on oral hygiene, pre/post treatment, plaque control, and nutrition as it relates to dental health; Records examination findings on patients' charts; Pours and trims study models; fabricates custom trays or casts; debrides and polishes appliances, prostheses, and dentures; Sterilizes instruments and disinfects surfaces, in accordance with the infection control policy; Maintains inventory; Maintains equipment and dental operatories; Stocks and maintains tubs and trays; Greets patients, retrieves, and maintains charts; Schedules appointments, answers telephone, and assists patients with questions; Assists dentist as necessary; Collects and records clinical data, such as vital signs, general physical condition of patient, and identifying permanent and primary teeth; May provide chair-side assistance to the dental hygienist in the application of sealants; May expose, process, and mount radiographs; May travel to schools and other community settings to assist in the provision of dental services; May communicate with program participants who have limited English language skills; May be assigned to serve as a member of an Incident Command System (ICS) Team, or a similar public health response team which may include the conduct of operations on a 24/7 basis at remote locations. May serve as a department and/or community incident commander or on the incident command team. Satisfactory completion of a dental assistant training program approved by the Ohio State Board of Career Colleges and Schools or by the American Dental Association OR certification as a Dental Assistant by the Dental Assisting National Board or by the Commission on Ohio Dental Assistant Certification. Some positions may require possession of a valid State of Ohio Dental Assistant Radiographer license. Some positions may require possession of a valid drivers license.
