Job Description:
Under general direction, is responsible for performing comprehensive oral health services for eligible recipients of the Health Department's oral health program; provides for the safety and welfare of patients during the delivery of dental services; and provides oral health education for clinic patients and the community. Working conditions are primarily in a medical environment. May be exposed to infectious diseases. Must be willing to comply with all OSHA regulations and current immunization policies. Exercises direct supervision over assigned staff. This position is a temporary grant funded position, therefore it is unclassified and has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission. This position is likewise subject to at-will employment status and can be terminated at any time for any reason. The San Antonio Metro Health District (SAMHD) provides public health services to clients, which may include risk for exposure to and possible transmission of vaccine-preventable diseases. Employees in high-risk positions will be required to obtain relevant immunizations, per. Review and consideration will be given to requests for exemption from this policy. Work Location Varies Work Hours 8:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., Monday - Friday Oversees oral health clinic. Maintains a high standard of care and quality control. Provides evaluations and consulting services to the City of San Antonio residents to include: school personnel, personnel in charge of child growth and development programs, and others interested in the community oral health program. Assesses prevalent causes of dental caries and makes recommendations for corrective measures. Examines school students for structural and degenerative oral defects. Operates dentistry tools to provide direct general outpatient dental care with emphasis on pediatric and adolescent patients. Provides oral health care to expectant mothers. Promotes oral health education through the use of visual aids, lectures, literature, and in-service training. Performs administrative, supervisory, and professional duties required in carrying out functions of a clinic. Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required. Graduation with a D.D.S. or a D.M.D. degree from a college or university accredited by the American Association of Dental Education. No substitution for education allowed. License to practice dentistry in the State of Texas. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university. Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted. Knowledge of modern dental practices, methods, and techniques. Knowledge of emergency dental procedures and CPR. Knowledge of patient records management techniques and procedures. Ability to supervise, train, and evaluate staff. Ability to develop and conduct oral presentations on dental health. Ability to perform oral examinations. Ability to perform emergency dental procedures. Ability to interpret oral radiographs. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
