School/College School of Medicine Title Department of Biomedical Engineering--Open Rank/Tenure-earning or Tenured--Cancer/Cancer Imaging Research Assignment Category Full-Time Rank Open Rank Tenure Status Open Tenure Payroll Status Faculty 12 Job DescriptionThe Department of Biomedical Engineering(BME), a joint department of the School of Medicine and the School of Engineering at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), invites applications from highly qualified individuals for tenure-earning and tenured positions at the rank of Assistant, Associate, and full Professor, based on experience and qualifications.Candidates who join this exciting environment must be committed to developing a robust extramurally funded research program, teaching excellence at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and involvement in service activities to the University and the profession. We are seeking candidates who apply innovative approaches to investigate cancer and the tumor microenvironment at all levels of analysis. While all cancer-focused biomedical engineering researchers are encouraged to apply, candidates with expertise in cancer imaging are particularly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate must have strong communication skills and be able to collaborate with colleagues and participate in ongoing departmental programs. Candidates should have demonstrated a strong track record of research with an interest in enhancing the research and teaching experiences of our undergraduate and graduate students.Positions require an earned doctoral degree or equivalent in biomedical engineering or related field. To be competitive for a tenured position, candidates must be nationally recognized for their scholarship, research, and commitment to education. Tenure-eligible candidates must have an outstanding vision for independent research and commitment to education. Salary is commensurate with the individual's experience.The Department of Biomedical Engineering was founded in 1977 and has an ABET accredited undergraduate program with approximately 200 undergraduate majors and 50 graduate students. The Department is located in the Schools of Medicine and Engineering on the UAB campus and has a highly-dedicated faculty, including junior, mid-career, and senior members with a diverse mix of research and educational interests. Furthermore, students conduct mentored research in substantial BME-led laboratory space both in the School of Medicine and School of Engineering. Our combined research environment fosters collaborative interactions with the School of Medicine, School of Engineering, UAB College of Arts and Sciences, UAB hospital, and O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, all of them located right in the heart of Birmingham. The O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center is one of 51 NCI-designated cancer centers in the nation and has > 400 scientists and physician-scientists working on groundbreaking discovery in basic science and clinical cancer. The O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center is home to some of the brightest minds in cancer research, exploring areas of basic, translational, clinical and population-based discovery to find newer, better methods for the prevention, detection, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
