Position Overview:

The Deputy Director of Public Safety (e.g. Deputy Chief of Public Safety) works with the Director of Public Safety (i.e. Chief of Public Safety) by providing supervision of the Department of Public Safety staff and works to create a safe campus environment. When multiple incidents, campus events, and safety-related meetings are happening on campus, the Director of Public Safety and the Deputy Chief of Public Safety will each take lead on specific situations. When the Deputy Chief is on-duty and the Chief is off-campus, the Deputy Chief is the lead staff member for the Department of Public Safety operation. In absence of Director of Public Safety, the Deputy Director automatically serves as Interim Director of Public Safety, as needed.

Essential Responsibilities:

* Assists Public Safety staff on duty, by supervising daily work details, advising, counseling, training, and relaying information from the Director.

* Serves as lead Public Safety leader during shifts when the Chief is not on campus for the department's 24-hour, 7 day-a-week, 365-day operation.

* Maintains security of all campus buildings, property, students, and visitors by routinely patrolling and surveying assigned areas.

* Maintains direct communication with the Director about all staff and community concerns.

* Maintains a positive working relationship with Residence Life staff, ensuring a benefit to the campus community.

* Responds to all calls for assistance from the Siena Heights community, including those from the Resident Life staff.

* Assists Director and/or leads campus investigations of possible criminal and campus policy violations.

* Maintains all payroll processing requirements for DPS staff.

* Shall maintain a positive working relationship with outside emergency response agencies, providing lead assistance when the Director is off-campus and/or not working.

* Accurately completes all reports, logs, and documentation, as required.

* Responsible for all patrol and special event scheduling of staff, ensuring that all shifts and events are staffed appropriately. The Deputy Chief is responsible for implementing Event Standard Operating Procedures (ESOPs) specific to the safety of the respective shifts and events.

* Assumes control of all incidents requiring DPS intervention or assistance, maintaining contact with DPS staff and outside emergency agency assistance, as necessary. Directs and maintains communication with on and off-campus administrative authorities during emergent situations, calling-in additional staff and completing reporting requirements, as per procedure.

* Assists the Director with implementing preventive safety programming and responsible for delivering community safety awareness programs.

* Responsible for DPS equipment management and for maintaining all keys and key inventories.

* Responsible for supervising all Cadet, Internship, and Volunteer programs.

* Attends judicial review boards and court trials, as assigned by the Director.

* Assists with the FTO program and the training of new staff.

* Shall have the final determination in towing a vehicle from SHU property, in the absence of the Director.

* Assists and/or leads management of all scheduled staff meetings.

* Assists the Director in policy and procedure enforcement, issuing verbal and/or written warnings, and advising the Director of decisions made as Deputy Director.

* Serves as Title IX Investigator for the University.

* Completes all other departmental duties, as assigned, by the Director of Public Safety.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

* High school graduate or equivalent. Two years of post-secondary education and/or prior management or supervisory experience preferred.

* Experience in law enforcement, security, or related fields is desired.

* Must be knowledgeable about university and public safety policy and procedures, able to respond to changing priorities, and able to direct the work of others.

* Must possess the ability to communicate with others, verbally and in writing.

* Must have the ability to remain calm and take control during emergent situations or under stressful conditions, especially when others are agitated or emotional.

* Must be First Aid, AED, CPR, and Fire Safety certified.

Required Physical Abilities for Work Environment:

* Must possess the ability to speak clearly via telephone, radio, and in person.

* Must have clear vision in a variety of light settings.

* Must possess the manual dexterity to check locks, doors, windows, etc.

* Must have the capacity to move quickly, if necessary, from place to place, inside and outside of buildings, during day or night, under a variety of weather conditions.

* Must be available to work a variety of hours, including weekends, nights, and holidays.

* Must possess the manual dexterity to direct traffic in a variety of weather conditions.

* Must be able to work independently of others, under a variety of conditions.
