The Deputy Chief of Staff supports Parks mission by ensuring the smooth functioning of the Commissioner's Office, including coordinating critical agency projects with senior staff and City Hall. The Deputy Chief of Staff reports to the Chief of Staff and will work closely with agency leadership to fulfill Parks' strategic goals.

Major Responsibilities
  • Provide oversight and guidance to projects of strategic importance to the agency, especially those that require cross-functional collaboration.
  • Ensure timely and effective execution of the Commissioner's directives, priorities, and strategic initiatives.
  • Assist in overseeing the Commissioner's schedule and preparing all necessary relevant materials for meetings as well as ensuring meeting follow up.
  • Advise on and/or prepare the Commissioner's internal and external communications, both written and spoken.
  • Represent the Chief of Staff or Commissioner as required with staff, other City entities, and the stakeholder community at large.
  • Coordinate presentations, set agendas, and summarize deliverables for Senior Staff meetings.
  • Work in tandem with the Chief of Staff on critical policy and operational issues and serve as the Chief's representative as needed to ensure desired outcomes are achieved.
  • Serve as lead point of contact for the Commissioner's Office for all pool and beach related operations, policy development and crisis management.
  • Perform other related duties and functions as required.

MOVEMENT IN THE FACE OF CIVIL SERVICE LISTS IS PROHIBITED UNDER CIVIL SERVICE LAW.

Minimum Qualifications
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and four (4) years of full-time paid experience in: park management, park or urban rehabilitation, urban or regional planning, forestry or horticulture, landscape architecture, or a related field, at least 18 months of which must have been in an administrative, managerial or executive capacity, or in supervision of professional staff working in one or more of the above mentioned areas; or
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to “1” above. However, all candidates must possess the 18 months of administrative, managerial, executive or supervisory experience as described in “1” above.
Preferred Skills
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies across a diverse community.
  • Excellent attention to detail in all schedule-related matters.
  • Discretion and judgment in handling sensitive information.
  • Experience working directly with a public official or other high-profile principal.

Residency Requirement

Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency required within 90 days of hire for all other candidates.

Salary: $115,000.00 – $125,000.00
