Advancement through the career path is contingent upon achieving increasing levels of skill, experience, education, certification and performance. Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides security and bailiff duties at the entrance to Justice Court facilities and in and around the courtroom; escorts jury panels; monitors and assists defendants, witnesses, attorneys and visitors
- Goes out in the community alone or as a member of a team to serve legal papers and orders such as Writs of Attachment, Writs of Execution, Writs of Garnishment, Writs of Possession, Writs of Sequestration, Distress Warrants, Orders of Sale, Subpoenas, and Temporary Restraining Orders
- Checks addresses and conducts research to obtain a correct address or contact information; researches criminal justice information systems; contacts employers; or makes personal contact with attorneys and members of the Criminal District Attorney's staff and plaintiff to develop contact
- Responsible for maintaining logs and records of service attempts and returns court documents to the proper jurisdiction
- Enforces laws that may result in issuing a citation, making an on-sight arrest, serving a criminal warrant, or other action that results in apprehending violators and taking them before a magistrate
- Prepares incident reports, completes administrative forms and maintains activity logs
- May be exposed to risk of bodily injury
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from High School or General Education Development (GED) certificate
- One (1) year experience as a Peace Officer
- Proficient knowledge of law enforcement and security operations and the responsibilities of a peace officer
- Minimum of a Basic Peace Officer Proficiency Certificate from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE)
- Must possess and maintain a valid Texas Driver's License and an insurable driving record
- Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance
- Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
- May be required to work evening and weekend shifts
- May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
- Frequently working in County facilities
- Frequently operates or rides in police type vehicles
- Frequently works outside vehicle when serving legal papers at residences or places of employment
- Occasional exposure to outdoor weather environment
- Must have physical stamina to control persons who may be agitated or resistant
- Occasional exposure to hostile or violent individuals with occasional exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious diseases, and/or other potentially infectious material
- Occasionally moves items weighing up to 25 pounds
- Occasionally moves about the office
- Frequently communicates with others; must be able to exchange accurate information
- Constantly operates a two-way radio, cellular phone, handgun, and handcuffs
- Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery
- Positions self to perform essential functions
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position
