Job Description:

Under the general direction of the Corporation Counsel, leads in the performance of legal work of a high degree of professional difficulty in the drafting of legal instruments, in preparing opinions, and in performing a wide variety of other legal tasks; does related work as required.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The work of an employee in this class is of a high professional level involving the exercise of independent judgement in the rendering of legal opinions and in appearing as trial counsel and before Courts of Appeal. In this absence of the Corporation Counsel, the Deputy Corporation Counsel acts for and in place of the Corporation Counsel, and is required to supervise the work of other Assistant Corporation Counsels.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Plans and outlines assignments for subordinates attorneys; confers with department heads, contractors, representatives of private law firms on complex legal problems. Represents the City in trial and appellate courts. Performs the more complex legal tasks which arise. Prepares reports of departmental activities for the Corporation Counsel when required.

Qualifications

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of common law and of the state and federal law pertaining to municipal activities; comprehensive knowledge of civil court procedure and of the rules of evidence; thorough knowledge of the principles of public administration; a high degree of skill in preparing and drafting legal instruments, legislation, and briefs and opinions; special ability to analyze, appraise and apply legal principles and precedents to legal problems; ability to supervise the work of others; good command of language; initiative, tact and courtesy; good professional and administrative judgement; and good address. ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE Graduation from a law school of recognized standing and Seven (7) years of experience as an attorney, at least two (2) years of which shall have involved the practice of municipal law, and graduation from a law school of recognized standing.

A license to practice law in New York State.
