Minimum Qualifications Admission to the New York State Bar; and a minimum of five (5) years of legal experience. Candidates with substantial State court civil litigation experience and knowledge of the State legislative process are encouraged to apply.
Duties Description ASSIGNMENT: Under the general direction of the Counsel and Senior Legislative Counsel to the Office of Court Administration, the duties of the Deputy Counsel for Civil and Legislative Matters include, but are not limited to: (1) providing legal advice and guidance to Unified Court System (UCS) personnel on civil practice, housing, and general legislative issues; (2) serving as counsel to the UCS Advisory Committee on Civil Practice, as well as other advisory bodies as needed, (3) conducting legal and legislative research; (4) preparing and reviewing legislative proposals and administrative rules and regulations; and (5) engaging in negotiations on legislation with the State Legislature and the Governor's Office. Some travel within New York State is required. Candidates should have a proven track record of leadership in the legal profession, demonstrated success working with management, the legislature and other governmental entities, strong verbal and written communication skills, and excellent interpersonal skills.Deputy Counsel have formal responsibility for a specific function or field of law which relates to the development and implementation of court policies and/or the administration of the Unified Court System (UCS). Deputy Counsel work under the general direction of the Counsel to the Office of Court Administration, and are significantly involved in assisting in the overall management of Counsel's Office. Deputy Counsel analyze and advise court administrators on legal issues and questions presented by administrative rules, legislation and litigation that are complex and specialized, and/or that have serious implications for court administration and operations. They also perform other related duties.
