Mayor's Office of Housing and Community Development

The mission of the Mayor's Office of Housing and Community Development (MOHCD) is to address social, economic, and racial inequities through the creation of affordable housing opportunities and the funding of essential services that are foundational for strong communities. MOHCD actively collaborates with community-based organizations, non-profits, affordable housing providers, financial institutions, and other City agencies and staff, in the pursuit of a more equitable and affordable San Francisco.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The City and County of San Francisco is seeking a collaborative, community-oriented, innovative leader who has demonstrated success in working with diverse communities. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of community development programs, including Community Development Block Grant programs and similar HUD funding streams. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker capable of implementation through teamwork and collaboration and must be able to communicate effectively with people from all constituencies and neighborhoods, including residents, elected officials, advisory committee members, advocates, and other city department staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The MOHCD Deputy Director of Community Development oversees all work of the Community Development Division and its 25 staff members and reports directly to the MOHCD Department Director. This position plans, organizes, directs, and manages the day-to-day activities and operations of the Community Development Division and assists in the overall management of the department.

A primary responsibility of this position is the distribution of approximately $90 million to more than 150 community-based organizations providing essential services to the residents of San Francisco. This position administers major Federal grant programs including the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) programs.

Day-to-day, the Deputy Director plans, directs, and coordinates the work of the Community Development Division; meets with management staff to identify and resolve problems; assigns projects and programmatic areas of responsibility; reviews and evaluates work methods and procedures; and performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Provide strong leadership, manage subordinate staff, exercise effective judgment in critical/emergency situations, analyze complicated and sensitive issues, and communicate options clearly to the Mayor, Mayoral staff, commissions, boards, committees, other agencies and the public.
