Summary

The Georgia Department of Agriculture is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Deputy Director of the Policy Division.

Applicants should have a minimum of four years of relevant experience working in federal or state political or policy positions and an interest in existing agricultural issues and emerging industries such as hemp and electric vehicles.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Candidates applying for this position should have a minimum of four (4) years of work experience at the State Capitol in a policy-related role, working in Georgia politics more broadly, or other applicable roles.

2. Familiarity with the legislative process and General Assembly are necessary and a four-year undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university in Political Science is required.

Duties

The duties of the Deputy Director of Policy will include, but are not limited to:

* Monitoring policy and legal changes relevant to the Department at the state and federal levels.

* Assisting in the legislative drafting process.

* Conducting policy and legislative research.

* Representing the Department at General Assembly Committee hearings.

* Assisting the Director with stakeholder meetings.

* Preparing thorough policy memorandums and legislative summaries for internal and external circulation.

* Conducting policy and legislative research (including multi-state surveys; model legislation; and pending lawsuits related to new legislation, etc.).

* Drafting Department newsletter of legislative activity during the session.

* Coordinating the annual D.C. fly-in event.

* Organizing correspondence with Congressional Delegation.

* Attending conventions and conferences with the policy team and Commissioner.

* Preparing slide decks for the Commissioner related to policy talks or presentations (including budget presentations).

* Interacting with GDA's numerous division directors and large staff during and after the legislative session.

* Assisting the Policy Director in managing the Department's administrative role regarding its attached agencies and programs (including leading the attached entity's board meetings and other administrative tasks).

* Monitoring and responding to constituent inquiries directed at our policy email account.

Other tasks as assigned to support the Director, Chief of Staff, and Commissioner.

Bachelor's degree in operations management, business administration, or a related field which includes three (3) years in a managerial or supervisory role; or seven (7) years of related professional experience which includes three (3) years in a managerial or supervisory role; or three (3) years of experience required at the lower level Mgr, Business Ops (GSM010) or position equivalent. Note: An equivalent combination of knowledge, education, job or intern experience, training, or certifications that provides the necessary knowledge and skills to successfully perform the job at the level listed may be substituted year-over-year.
