Since 1968, Brooklyn A has provided free legal services for low-income residents of Brooklyn, pursuing a neighborhood-based mission of justice, empowerment, and community development. For over half a century, we have utilized an array of legal and advocacy strategies â community organizing, affirmative civil rights litigation, and eviction defense to defend the rights of individuals and families. Collaboration with city, state, and federal officials to enforce housing laws and develop legislative solutions is also an integral part of our strategy. Brooklyn A has three core programs â Preserving Affordable Housing (PAH) Program, Consumer & Economic Advocacy (CEA) Program, and Community & Economic Development (CED) Program â each of which has unique initiatives and plays a vital community role to ensure basic needs are met and fundamental rights affirmed.Brooklyn A seeks a Deputy Director, PAH Paralegal Team who will be responsible for ensuring the successful and smooth operations of the PAH program legal and administrative functions, including client communication and case management, assisting with the drafting of pleadings and papers; case filings and client intakes. The Deputy Director will serve as a direct supervisor to the PAH paralegal team including case/work delegation, oversight of litigation support assignments, and training. They will participate in case review meetings and ensure the case management system is accurate, updated regularly, and cases are closed in a timely manner.Other responsibilities include:Manage client intake process, including answering incoming calls for related housing issues, assessing immediate needs and scheduling intake meetings;Act as client liaison/advocate to coordinate with internal and external programs and agencies to make referrals and to ensure integrated services delivery;Communicate legal details to clients in a clear and precise manner in attorney's absence without providing legal consultation or advice;Prepare, edit, and proofread legal documents such as subpoenas, letters of advocacy, affidavits, and forms for administrative hearings;Research and investigate facts and law of case to determine causes of action/defenses and prepare case accordingly;File motions, briefs, pleadings, legal memos, and appeals with court clerk;Participate in community outreach events to promote legal services and recruit clients.To be successful in this role, you must have a minimum of five years of experience as a Paralegal/Legal Assistant or work involving legal procedures, terminology, or administration, and an Associate degree or higher in Paralegal Studies or Legal Assistance or Juris Doctorate (JD) or Doctor of Jurisprudence from an American Bar Association (ABA) approved program. You should have a passion for social justice and helping and representing clients in low-income tenant groups, community organizations, and coalitions.
