  • Performs a variety of complex law enforcement duties
  • Enforces State and Federal Laws and County and Municipal ordinances as required for the protection of life, health, safety, welfare and property.
  • Fulfills statutory requirements of the Sheriff as required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONMonitors and enforces traffic laws and codes by patrolling roads and highways in an assigned vehicle. Issues citations and written and verbal warnings makes car stops as appropriate, and investigate accidents. Controls the flow of traffic at accident sites; fires, ambulance calls, emergency scenes, private and public functions, and at times when traffic is inhibited, renders emergency aid pending arrival of ambulance. Performs a variety of patrol and public service duties other than in traffic control such as checking out suspicious persons and vehicles, responding to calls for service, assisting citizens in routine and emergency situations. Performs conflict intervention, rendering first aid, and responding to alarms and disturbances. Investigates criminal cases ranging from crimes against persons and property to crimes against peace, order and decency, carries evidence custody, crime scene control and investigation; interviewing of witnesses and suspects, and preparation of various forms of written formal reports. Assists citizens by providing information varying from giving directions to solving problems through face to-face and/or telephone contacts; provides crime prevention services to the public, as well as, general and specific law enforcement information, community service information, and other appropriate assistance. Arrests suspects based on previous criminal investigation, arrest warrants, or probable cause determination, prepares and maintains detailed departmental reports and records which include crime, incident, informational, and accidents, as well, as, other reports as needed. Acts as liaison with outside agencies as necessary. Compiles written reports for referral to the District Attorney's Office, Probation Office, Courts, and other police agencies. Responds to special emergency situations such as search and rescue operations, wildland fires, declared disaster/emergency situations, aircraft emergencies, bomb threats, and jail incidents as required. Assists with the coordination of incidents command in the above situations. Appears in court or other administrative hearings as required. Provides sworn testimony at such hearings, depositions and trials. Provides various civil process service as required by the courts; including the service of summons, subpoenas, writs, and restraining orders. Conducts residential and commercial evictions. May conduct background investigations; provide crowd control at large special events. May be required to fill in as a prisoner transport officer, or court security officer as needed.DESIRED QUALIFICATIONMust be 21 years of age or older at the time of employment. Must have a Colorado Driver's License with a good driving record, and no current suspensions, revocations or license denials. Must pass a thorough background examination, a felony conviction, or any other criminal arrest may be grounds for dismissal solely at the determination of the Sheriff. Must pass written, oral, psychological, and physical examinations prior to employment. Must be able to maintain departmental proficiency standards on various tools including, but not limited to batons, firearms, and the department intoxilyzer. Must maintain certification in Basic Life Support, including CPR and First Aid.TRAINING AND/OR EDUCATION EXPERIENCE All applicants must have a high school diploma or GED Certificate. Must have successfully completed a Colorado P.O.S.T certification program, and be certified as a Level 1 Peace Officer.PHYSICAL DEMANDSMay be required to sit or stand for long periods of time. May be required to run short distances, must have vision and hearing corrected to normal. Must possess sufficient strength to carry or drag a human being (average 150 lbs.) from a hazardous area. Frequently pulls, pushes, climbs, balances, stoops, kneels, crouches, reaches, and handles in the daily performance of duty. Must possess sufficient physical strength to overcome and restrain a combative and or resistive subject. Oral capabilities enabling interpersonal communication, as well as, communication through a variety of media such as telephone radio, and intercom. UNUSUAL DEMANDSOn a daily basis, a Deputy may be required to use a variety of equipment, including, but not limited to an assigned motor vehicle, telephone, two-way radio, radar unit, intoxilyzer, computer, photocopier, printer, firearm, camera, baton, taser, and pepper spray.
