Salary: $24.82 - $32.27 Hourly Location : Jacksonville, NC Job Type: Full-Time Job Number: Deputy 2023/24 Department: Sheriff's Office Opening Date: 05/04/2023 Closing Date: Continuous Job Description Performs responsible protective service work in the Sheriff's Office involving a variety of general or support duty assignments and involving an element of personal danger; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision. Position ResponsibilitiesEnforcing laws; patrolling assigned area; investigating criminal activity; serving civil papers; ensuring safety of the public; testifying in court; maintaining records and files; preparing reports. (These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed.   • Operates a patrol vehicle to observe for violations of traffic laws, suspicious activities or persons and disturbances of law and order; responds to radio dispatches and answers calls and complaints.
  • Serves warrants, summons, subpoenas, civil process papers and makes arrests, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints.
  • Enforces traffic laws; issues citations for traffic violations; performs radar enforcement, DUI checks, traffic control, motorist assists, etc.
  • Assists other law enforcement officers and agencies on various tasks.
  • Operates computer to run checks, criminal histories, missing person's checks, etc.
  • Assists with criminal investigations by preserving, recording and presenting evidence, interviewing victims and witnesses and testifying in court.
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of records and files and prepares various reports.
  • Performs a variety of special tasks and duties such as desk officer, training officer, court security, investigations or other special assignments as qualified and assigned.
  • Ensures vehicle and equipment are in proper working order.
  • Performs related tasks as required.
Qualifications Some knowledge of law enforcement methods, practices and procedures; general knowledge of the geography of the County and location of important buildings; some knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Sheriff's Office; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear comprehensive reports; ability to deal courteously, firmly and tactfully with the public under stressful situations; ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances; possession of physical agility and endurance; skill in the use of firearms, chemical agents, weapons of defense and the operation of a motor vehicle; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates. Education, Experience, and Special Requirements Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.

  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License Required

Compensation will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations. North Carolina Local Governmental Employees' Retirement System Eligible employees are automatically enrolled in the retirement system and must contribute 6% of their gross salary each pay period. Once eligibility requirements are met, employees will be able to receive monthly payments for life based on their salary, age, and years of service credit. NC401k The County contributes 5% of employees' gross salary into the 401(k) account regardless of the employee's deferral amount. Vacation Leave Regular full-time employees earn 13.5 days of vacation leave per year. With each 5-year increment of employment, vacation accrual increases. Sick Leave Regular full-time employees earn 12 days of sick leave per year. Paid Holidays County employees receive paid holidays annually. The Board of County Commissioners may adjust the holiday schedule as deemed necessary.
