Job Description:Boston Globe Opinion is seeking a versatile editor to help us produce timely, thought-provoking columns by our staff writers and op-eds by outside writers. The editor will work with writers and Opinion editors to conceptualize fresh ideas on issues of the day, solicit outside writers capable of handling those ideas, and then edit their pieces. They will also need strong journalistic judgment to sift through freelance submissions and choose the best ones for publication. And they will work with staff columnists in fleshing out ideas and sharpening their prose.A sharp editing eye for detail, factuality, and logic are essential skills. So is creativity, wide-ranging curiosity, an open mind, and willingness to commission ideas from across the ideological spectrum. Finally, a desire to present arguments on a variety of platforms – whether through text, images, graphics, audio, or video – will be critical to making our report feel as fresh, urgent, and engaging as possible.Responsibilities:Solicit and edit opinion pieces from freelancers on a broad variety of issues of the day.Review unsolicited pieces and respond to the submitters.Work with staff columnists.Collaborate with the op-ed editor in producing the daily opinion section across all platforms. This involves first and second reading pieces, and writing enticing headlines.Handle social copy for opeds and columns.Edit and help produce newsletters written by columnists.Qualifications:At least five years professional experience in daily or magazine journalism.Experience in editing freelancers and commissioning essays will be a plus.Strong in ideas generation.Experience in working across a variety of digital platforms, including data, graphics, short video, and audio, will be preferred.Openness to working with content from wide ranging points of view.Strong collaborative skills. This is very much a team operation.The BGMP office is located in downtown Boston, near Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, and is easily accessible by MBTA and commuter rail lines.
