Deputy Sheriff - School Protection Officer (SPO)Must possess current Virginia DCJS Law Enforcement CertificationPlease click here to review automatic disqualifiers for this position$26.31 per hour + 50% credit given for years of DCJS Law Enforcement serviceFull salary range for this position $26.31 - $45.49 per hourPerforms responsible protective service work in the Sheriff's Office involving the protection of a school, protection of school staff, protection of students, and related work as required. This position does involve an element of personal danger. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a Deputy Sergeant.This is a part-time law enforcement position that is eligible for limited benefits packageMust be available to work the full hours of the school day during the school calendar year.* Patrols assigned school and ensures a safe environment for students, staff, and visitors;* Maintains situational awareness of visitors and activities at the school;* Intervenes and appropriately responds to any threats toward teachers, students, and visitors;* Conducts daily inspections of the school to ensure that all physical security measures are in place and working appropriately;* Responds to radio dispatches and answers calls and complaints for their assigned school;* Makes arrests, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints;* Subdues resisting suspects using weapons, maneuvers and other approved self-defense methods;* Participates in school's lockdown and other emergency preparedness drills;* Performs a variety of crime prevention duties;* Performs related tasks as required;* Completion of Daily Activity Reports* Knowledge of police methods, practices and procedures;* general knowledge of the geography of the County;* knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Sheriff's Office;* ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear comprehensive reports;* ability to deal courteously, firmly, and tactfully with the public;* ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surround hazards and circumstances;* possession of physical agility and endurance;* skill in the use of firearms and the operation of a motor vehicle;* knowledge of the methods, practices and procedures for securing and protecting people from physical threats.Education and Experience:Must possess current Virginia DCJS Law Enforcement certificationGraduation from high school or high school equivalencyPossession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of VirginiaMust meet and maintain all Stafford County Sheriff's department and State Criminal Justice System training and education requirements for positionRequired to be a United States citizen and at least 21 years of age at time of hireThe successful applicant must pass physical agility testing, interview, polygraph examination, full background investigation to include a criminal history check, physical examination, psychological examination and drug and alcohol testing.Special RequirementsThis is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; and some work requiring the lifting or dragging, for short distances, of 165 pounds of weight occasionally; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and wearing a respirator. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
