Salary: $24.98 Hourly Location : Various Locations, AL Job Type: Full-Time Department: Uniform Services - Baldwin County Sheriff's Office Opening Date: 09/25/2024 Closing Date: 10/9/2024 11:59 PM Central Position Description A Deputy Sheriff provides safety and well-being of the general public, to deter criminal activity within communities, and to enforce all laws, statutes, codes, ordinances, and regulations, and performs a variety of general law enforcement functions consisting of patrol, court services, investigations, arrest, apprehension, supervision of offenders and special details or specific assignments within the assigned division. Successful applicants must pass a criminal background check and will be subject to a pre-employment drug screen. As of October 1, 2017, all Deputy Sheriff candidates that are not APOSTC certified or have an Associate's degree or higher from a College or University accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), or an equivalent accreditation system, must take the Basic Abilities Test (BAT) before hire. The BAT test can be scheduled at a participating Alabama Community College. Locally, the test is offered at Coastal Community; please contact them at 251-###-####. If you need to schedule the test at another location, the complete list of Alabama Community Colleges is available on the Employment tab of the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office website. The candidate is responsible for scheduling the test, as well as, the $45 testing fee. Interviews are expected to take place on October 23rd & 24th, 2024.JOB LOCATIONS

WORKING CONDITIONS The position may involve exposure to and require the officer to function in the presence of the following: inclement weather, to include extreme heat/cold, rain, ice, wind, etc.; light conditions associated with day and night; fire, smoke, chemical leaks/spills - as close proximity as necessary to provide emergency services; personal danger, including but not limited to armed and/or dangerous persons, and animals, persons and/or articles with contagious/communicable diseases, hazards associated with emergency driving, traffic control and working in and around traffic. Essential Job Functions
  • Enforces all applicable codes, ordinances, laws and regulations (both traffic and criminal) in order to protect life and property, prevent crime, and promote security.
  • Prevents/discovers commission of crime; apprehends, arrests and processes criminals, fugitives and offenders; writes citations.
  • Patrols assigned area and watches for suspicious activity.
  • Responds to calls relayed by dispatchers, including domestic disputes, assaults, burglaries, traffic accidents, lost or missing persons searches, public service duties.
  • Conducts preliminary investigations; interviews victims, complainants and witnesses and takes statements; gathers information and evidence; secures crime scenes.
  • Inspects premises of residential /commercial buildings/properties to detect suspicious conditions.
  • Attends court; testifies in judicial proceedings; attends bond hearings.
  • Creates/maintains positive public relations with the general public
  • Performs various court-related functions as assigned (e.g., serves warrants, subpoenas, and civil process documents; performs court security functions; monitors/supervises offenders etc.)
  • Provides assistance and back up support to other deputies as necessary; substitutes for co-workers in their absence; performs flexible unit assignments as needed in emergency response; provides emergency response on a twenty-four-hour basis as needed.
  • Contacts and cooperates with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the investigation of crimes and the apprehension of offenders.
  • Assists local fire departments and emergency medical technicians.
  • Inspects and maintains assigned patrol vehicle, uniform, issued equipment, weapons, etc.
  • Confers with supervisors, staff, deputies, and others as necessary to obtain information or resolve problems; contacts command/ supervisory personnel by radio, telephone, voice mail, etc., for emergency response and critical incident communications.
  • Communicates effectively and coherently over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications.
  • Prepares reports, logs, citations, forms and other documentations; maintain files, logs and records; performs other clerical duties.
  • Receives various documentations; reviews, processes, responds, forwards, maintains, and or takes other action as appropriate.
  • Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS The work is generally medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Activities could occasionally require heavy to very heavy work, exerting up to 100 or more pounds of force. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:
  • Ability to see details at a distance and at close range (within a few feet of the observer);
  • Ability to hear sirens, alarms, the human voice, and to accurately identify and distinguish between inputs from short and long ranges and clearly hear radio messages;
  • Possess an audible voice for in-person and radio communications.
  • Possess sufficient body strength in order to perform normal duties of the position;
  • Ability to wear a fully equipped duty belt for 8 to 12 hours at a time;
  • Ability to wear a bullet proof vest for 8 to 12 hours at a time;
  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium;
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized;
  • Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet;
  • Crouching: Bending the body downwards and forward by bending leg and spine;
  • Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
  • Grasping: Applying pressure with the whole hand;
  • Handling: Picking, holding or otherwise working with the whole hand;
  • Hearing: Ability to hear and understand at normal speaking levels with or without correction;
  • Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees;
  • Lifting: Ability to lift and move objects;
  • Manual Dexterity: Primarily with fingers and in picking, pinching or typing;
  • Mental Acuity: Ability to make rational decisions;
  • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion;
  • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward;
  • Reaching: Ability to frequently extend hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction;
  • Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands and/or fingers;
  • Speaking/Talking: Ability to communicate clearly, accurately, and concisely through speech;
  • Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time;
  • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles;
  • Visual Acuity: Ability to perform activities such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures, transcribing, viewing a computer screen/terminal; and /or extensive reading, with or without correction;
  • Walking: ability to move about on foot to accomplish tasks or moving from one work site to another
Education and ExperienceEducation and Experience: Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent and a passing score on the Basic Abilities Test (BAT) or an Associate's degree or higher for admission to the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training (APOST) academy, or two years related experience and certified as a law enforcement officer. Licenses or Certifications: Must be 21 years of age, possess a valid driver's license and be insurable by the County's insurance standards. Must obtain and maintain NCIC certification. Must possess an Alabama Peace Officer Minimum Standards Certification and maintain the certification throughout employment. Special Requirements: Must be mentally and physically capable of performing police duties to include demonstration of firearms proficiency qualification and maintaining police powers as required by APOST-C. Must be willing to work regular and irregular shift work and shift rotations to provide police services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (weekends and holidays included). Shifts are normally 8 or 12 hours in duration but may be extended in the event of emergency, disaster, manpower shortage, workload or work-in-progress, and/or call outs.   • Skill in the use and operation of all assigned equipment to include issued vehicle, emergency equipment, firearms, restraint devices, technical equipment.
  • Skills in defensive driving.
  • Skills in critical thinking to using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Skills in time management.
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise and accurate reports.
  • Ability to deal tactfully, but firmly, with offenders, suspects, witnesses and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, court and enforcement agency representatives and the general public.
  • Ability to verbally and effectively communicate with a variety of individuals representing diverse cultures and backgrounds and function calmly in challenging situations which require a high degree of sensitivity, tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to compute mathematical data, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and percentages with and without a calculator.
  • Ability to comprehend and retain factual information pertaining to laws, statutes and policies, and accurately apply what is learned.
