JOB SUMMARY: The Desert Tortoise Biology Lead will manage desert tortoise biology projects, combining field and office work while applying technical expertise. The role requires strong writing skills, leadership, and a commitment to developing a long-term consulting career in environmental biology.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job functions:
- Conduct special status plant and wildlife surveys, including desert tortoise and nesting bird surveys
- Perform habitat assessments and construction compliance monitoring
- Conduct noxious weed surveys, agricultural insect pest surveys, and raven point count surveys
- Assist in managing a field office, ensuring efficient operations and coordination
- Develop and manage Survey 123 tools and GIS data for project documentation and analysis
- Provide leadership and supervision for field teams, ensuring high-quality survey execution
- Ensure compliance with relevant permit requirements for biological surveys and monitoring
- Demonstrate strong writing skills for report preparation, proposals, and documentation
- Commit to developing a long-term consulting career in environmental biology and project management
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance at work and meetings
- Support, actively participate, and act in accordance with Wright's and Eocene Environmental Group's culture of safety and employee ownership

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Mojave Desert Tortoise Biologist Authorized by USFWS and CDFW
- Degree in biology, natural resource management, environmental studies or similar
- Ability to work long hours in potentially extreme weather conditions
- Competence using global positioning system units, maps, ipads, and submeter accuracy devices
- The ability to operate a four-wheel drive vehicle over rough terrain
- The ability to perform work duties independently or as part of a team
- Clear communicator, highly organized, motivated, thorough, accurate, and dependable
- A working knowledge of standard office computer software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access)
- Ability to read, write and speak English sufficient to perform job duties and to interact and communicate with employees and vendors
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Familiarity with both insect and plant agricultural pest identification and management
- CDFW Authorized Mohave Ground Squirrel Biologist
- Capable GIS and Survey 123 developer or willingness to learn. Familiarity with ESRI GIS applications (including desktop, ArcGIS, Field Maps, Survey123, etc.)
- Experience leading a field team, capable of managing work assignments with team members, troubleshooting in the field
- Experience capturing or handling wildlife species using specialized equipment
- Plant and plant community identification skills for species common to the Mojave Desert
- Experience working with utility companies
- Survey experience with any of the following species: Mohave ground squirrel, Burrowing Owl, Kit Fox, Swainson's Hawk, American Badger, Logger Head Shrike, Lane Mountain Milk Vetch, Clokey's cyptantha, Desert Cymopterus, Barstow wooly sunflower, Mojave Menodora, Creamy blazing star, Mojave Monkeyflower, Bever dam breadroot, Parish's phacelia, or Mojave Spine Flower
- Experience conducting avian point count surveys and raven management actions
- Strong technical report writing skills
- Prior experience working in Utah, Arizona, and California or Nevada
