Job Title: Design Associate

Position Summary:
The Design Associate will be responsible for developing and coordinating architectural designs and drafting for large commercial, public agency, and school facilities projects. This role includes creating architectural layouts, conducting field surveys, and ensuring that all designs comply with relevant codes and regulations. The ideal candidate is skilled in AutoCAD and 3D design software, with a background in architectural design and space planning. This role requires effective collaboration with vendors, contractors, and internal teams to deliver functional and visually appealing design solutions.
Minimum Required Qualifications:
- Experience: At least five (5) years of full-time, paid professional experience in large commercial, public agency, or school facilities, using AutoCAD and at least one 3D design software such as SketchUp.
- Architectural Design Experience: Experience coordinating drafting with technicians, conducting surveys and field investigations, and reviewing vendor and contractor drawings.
- Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze architectural problems related to space utilization, equipment, and allocation, with the ability to recommend solutions.
- Code Knowledge: Familiarity with California Department of Education guidelines, ADA requirements, and relevant building codes.
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Architecture or Engineering from a recognized institution.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Material Knowledge: Understanding of architectural characteristics of building materials.
- Code Proficiency: Proficient in interpreting California Department of Education, ADA, Building & Safety, and Fire codes.
- Design Skills: Proficiency in creating design options, space planning, and construction documentation.
- Technical Proficiency: Skilled in AutoCAD, SketchUp, and other relevant design software.
- Aesthetic and Design Principles: Knowledge of design principles for commercial, government, and educational facilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Space Planning and Projection: Assess space needs based on operational requirements, with projections and recommendations for long-term planning or modifications.
- Restacking Plan Support: Contribute to restacking plans by reviewing documents, responding to Requests for Clarifications, and preparing design documents.
- Scope Development and Design Options: Develop scope of work and create design options using CAD and 3D software for review and approval.
- Drafting and Specifications Creation: Prepare drawings, specifications, and estimates for alterations and installations according to space and departmental requirements.
- Field Surveys and Research: Conduct field surveys and research to inform design development.
- Agency Submissions and Reporting: Prepare applications for agency approvals and compile design packets and reports for executive review.
- Complex Architectural Drafting: Produce architectural drawings, construction details, and plans for structural improvements.
- Code Analysis: Conduct code analysis to ensure all designs meet building standards.
- Additional Duties: Perform other related duties as assigned.
