Job Description: Design Engineer - Protection and Controls

Overview

Under the supervision of the Manager of System Protection Engineering, this role involves designing and supporting electric substation, transmission line, and generation equipment control and fault protection systems. The Design Engineer will collaborate with Evergy System Protection Engineers on Protection & Controls (P&C) designs for assigned projects. Initial responsibilities include becoming familiar with engineering documents, drawings, and processes.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design electric substation, transmission line, and generation equipment control and fault protection systems to ensure reliability and safety.
  • Specify substation equipment (e.g., bus, ground mats, conduit, power circuit breakers, transformers, relay panels, etc.) based on system ratings and standards.
  • Develop protective relay systems, metering, and SCADA designs using research, past projects, and regulatory standards.
  • Gather and analyze system data (e.g., voltage, ampacity, impedance, relay settings) to meet reporting and system requirements.
  • Create detailed project scopes, cost estimates, and multi-year budget plans for system protection and control projects.
  • Support troubleshooting, failure analysis, testing, commissioning, and other technical operations.
  • Prepare and review technical drawings and specifications for compliance with company and industry standards.
  • Direct and review work of designers and technicians to ensure safety, quality, and regulatory compliance.

Mandatory Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Experience: Preferred experience in utility-related substation, generation, and transmission line equipment control systems and fault protection.

Skills:

  • Proficiency in schematic, wiring, and logic diagrams.
  • Knowledge of power engineering principles, relays, and protection schemes.
  • Ability to develop elementary drawings and relay settings for protection designs.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and database tools.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Capacity to learn company design philosophies and major systems promptly.

  • Travel: Some day-trip travel may be required; regular travel is not expected.
