Job Description:

We are seeking a DESIGNER – Men's & Women's Bottoms & Outerwear to join the Orvis Team! This is a remote position.

We are looking for an innovative and detail-oriented Apparel Designer specializing in outerwear and bottoms to join our design team at Orvis. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of fabrics, garment construction, fit direction, and a passion for creating quality, functional, outerwear and bottoms that meet the needs of our men's and women's customer base. This position will work closely with our design team members as well as partner closely with our Product Development/Sourcing, Technical Design, and Merchandising team.

Position Interfaces:

This position reports to the Senior Manager - Men's Design, and interfaces with the women's and men's product development, technical design, and merchandising team. This position will partner closely with these teams to ensure design direction and details are executed successfully, assortment needs are met, and ensure all products maintain the Orvis aesthetic and our quality standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Design Creation: Conceptualize and design original outerwear and bottoms that align with the brand's seasonal direction, assortment strategy, and our Orvis customer. Maintain consistency with the brand's core values, aesthetic, and customer demographic in every design. Ensure the product lines reflect the seasonal direction, customer feedback, and business goals.
  • Design Research: Conducting market and trend research to understand consumer needs. Analyze competitor products and identify opportunities for differentiation and Orvis ownable details and silhouettes.
  • Fabric & Materials Selection: Choose appropriate fabrics, trims, and hardware (e.g., zippers, buttons, snaps) that complement design concepts and meet functional requirements (weatherproofing, durability, comfort). Partner with suppliers to source sustainable, high-quality materials. Provide print allocation of seasonal prints for necessary bottoms and outerwear styles.
  • Technical Drawings & Specifications: Create detailed flat sketches with fabric, fit, trim, and construction direction to pass off to our PD and Tech teams. Collaborate with the product team to ensure technical accuracy and flawless execution. Well versed in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign.
  • Sample Development: Review protos to ensure the design and direction is executed accurately while maintaining product needs. Participate in fittings to review fit, function, and overall aesthetic.
  • Sustainability & Innovation: Integrate sustainable practices into your designs, considering eco-friendly fabrics, sustainable production methods, and innovative design solutions to reduce environmental impact.
  • Collaboration: Work cross-functionally with merchandising, product development, and tech design to ensure designs meet assortment needs and align with seasonal concept and product initiatives. Present designs and concepts with the product team at the DDR reviews.
  • Sample Approvals: Ensure that all designs meet the highest standards of quality, fit, and construction. Review and approve photo samples.

Competencies and Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Apparel Design
  • 4+ years of experience in apparel design, with a strong focus in outerwear and bottoms (experience with technical garments or performance is a plus).
  • Proficiency in design software such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign
  • Knowledge of garment construction and fabric properties.
  • Understanding of functional and technical fabrications and construction
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Passion for design, problem solving, and ensuring the Orvis aesthetic is represented in product designs
  • Experience designing for both men's and women's outerwear and bottoms.
  • Familiarity with performance and technical outerwear, including ski, active, and weather-resistant garments.
  • Knowledge of sustainable and eco-friendly fabrics and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience in creating designs for global markets, with an understanding of international fashion trends and consumer preferences.
  • Familiarity with garment fit and sizing standards, especially for performance and casual wear.
  • Self motivated and proactive in collaboration in a remote working environment
  • Travel 4-6 times per year to our Vermont headquarters for DDR product reviews
