DescriptionPOSITION SUMMARY:The Detective Sergeant has the responsibility to carry out all orders and directives issued to him/her by the Chief or Lieutenant of Law Enforcement. The Detective Sergeant shall be responsible for criminal investigations conducted by BMPD, Property Room Manager, and Supervisor in the absence of the Lieutenant or Chief of Police.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Investigate and complete criminal complaints that fall under the Federal Major Crimes Act, State of Michigan, or Bay Mills Tribal Code.Review and submit investigation reports to make sure they are clear, concise, logical, and impartial manner for submission to Lieutenant and Chief of Police. Shall guide officers during the course of criminal investigations.Ensure all property/evidence collected are properly marked and entered correctly in reports.Shall be Property Room Manager for BMPD.Collaborate with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Alcohol Tobacco Firearms (ATF), Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and Tribal, local, State, and any other Federal Agencies and Prosecutors.Shall prepare Arrest and Search Warrants that are needed during the course of a criminal investigation and to assist officers with these.Respond to police emergencies that require the presence of a commanding officer.Directing, controlling, and supervising subordinates.Performing all related work as required by the Chief or Lieutenant.Patrol and provide full law enforcement services.Assist conservation officers when needed.Take command of the Police Department in the absence of the Chief and Lieutenant.Other duties may be assigned within the scope and complexity of this position's essential functions.Must attend any and all mandatory training offered through the Bay Mills Human Resources Training Department and BMPD.Shall conduct background investigations on incoming officers.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, sit and stand. Occasionally the employee must squat, crawl, kneel, bend, crouch, balance, push/pull, and climb heights of about 10ft, with frequent reaching above shoulder level. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, with frequent lifting and/or moving up to 10 pounds. The employee is required to use hands and feet for repetitive movement. The job also requires the employee to be around moving machinery, drive automotive equipment, and may be exposed to dust, fumes, gases, and changes in temperature and humidity.POSITION REQUIREMENTS:High school diploma or equivalent required.Must have at least five years experience as a police officer and is MCOLES certified.Must complete BIA-approved supervisory training within one year of appointment.Must be able to supervise, organize, and train subordinates.Must be deputized as a tribal, federal, and state of Michigan officer.Must be able to perform all duties of a police officer.Excellent communication skills are required.Must have an excellent past work record.To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each function listed under the essential functions and physical demands categories of this position description.
